Northern hydropower plants exceed dead water level, power supply is increasing

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên21/06/2023

On June 21, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that in recent days, water flow to hydroelectric reservoirs in the Northern region has improved.

The current water levels of Son La, Lai Chau , Tuyen Quang, and Ban Chat hydropower reservoirs have all accumulated 4-7 meters above the dead water level; Lai Chau has a small reservoir so the water level is approximately 15 meters above the dead water level. However, these hydropower reservoirs are still limiting their mobilization to prepare for the next heat wave.

Thermal power plants in the North are being mobilized to maximum power generation capacity.

Also according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the North is currently in the early flood period. It is expected that in the coming time, the water flow to the lakes will continue to increase and can ensure electricity supply with an average calculated load of about 421 million kWh/day.

In the extreme case of no flood, the North can still use the remaining water in the lake, combined with the natural water flow to the lakes to meet the load demand, however the ability to store water will be difficult.

According to statistics on June 20, the total electricity output of the system reached 861.8 million kWh, an increase of 46.9 million kWh compared to June 19. Of which, the electricity output in the North reached 405.9 million kWh, an increase of 22.8 million kWh compared to June 19.

On June 20, the supply from hydropower and thermal power in the North increased compared to June 19. Specifically, thermal power output on June 20 in the North reached 273.0 million kWh, an increase of 3.9 million kWh compared to June 19; hydropower reached 79.0 million kWh, an increase of 19.2 million kWh compared to June 19.

On June 20, the Ministry of Industry and Trade recorded that 2 factories had reduced capacity, including Thai Binh 2 Thermal Power Plant and Uong Bi Thermal Power Plant. Currently, the total power shortage due to long-term incidents of coal-fired thermal power plants is 2,100 MW ; the total short-term incidents are 880 MW.

Previously, on June 15, the Ministry of Industry and Trade issued a document requesting thermal power plants to concentrate human resources, materials and necessary conditions to immediately fix newly arising incidents of a short-term nature; urgently handle and fix generators with long-term incidents.

In addition, since June 14, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has regularly organized working delegations to work directly at a number of thermal power plants in the North to urge and supervise the implementation of contents related to electricity production.

Previously, at the Conference on the operation and production of coal-fired thermal power plants in the northern region organized by Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) on the afternoon of June 19, with the participation of 24 investors of coal-fired thermal power plants, EVN General Director Tran Dinh Nhan said that the supply of electricity to the North is facing many difficulties and challenges; at many times, electricity has had to be reduced to ensure the safety and security of the national power system.

Meanwhile, the total power capacity of EVN and the 3 Power Generation Corporations 1, 2, 3 accounts for about 38.4% of the total power capacity of the entire system. Accordingly, in addition to the efforts of EVN and its member units, power investors outside EVN play a very important role in ensuring electricity supply for the country.

EVN leaders called for the cooperation of power plants to contribute to ensuring the highest power supply and the best quality of electricity for the northern provinces.
