Thuong Xuan is a mountainous district located in the west of Thanh Hoa province, with 16 communes and towns, 124 villages, hamlets and neighborhoods, of which 112 are mountainous. The whole district has nearly 23,000 households with more than 96,000 people, including 3 ethnic groups: Thai, Kinh, Muong, of which the Thai ethnic group accounts for nearly 55,000 people. In recent years, ethnic minorities in Thuong Xuan district have been preserving traditional cultural values, exploiting potentials and advantages associated with tourism development.

At the cultural house of Lum Nua village, Van Xuan commune (Thuong Xuan), Mr. and Mrs. Vi Van May, Cam Ba Thuy, Nguyen Thi Trinh... told us about the cultural beauty of the Thai people in Lum Nua in particular, the land of Trinh Van, the Thai Muong of Chieng Ban (or Chieng Van) in general. The story of the beautiful and brave Han girl who sacrificed herself for the peace of the village is always remembered and appreciated by generations of people here. On the day of the main festival, people perform a ceremony to worship Han girl and the gods who govern the village at the Muong cave. Mr. Le Minh Tuan, Vice Chairman of Van Xuan Commune People's Committee, said: In addition to the Nang Han festival, Van Xuan commune is currently restoring the Chin Gian temple festival - where the buffalo offering festival is held on the top of Pu Pen mountain. Van Xuan commune also has Cau cave, Thien Thuy waterfall (also known as Mu waterfall) in Xuan Lien Nature Reserve; weaving and typical dishes of the Thai ethnic group. Currently, the Women's Union of the commune has established a brocade weaving cooperative to restore and promote the cultural identity of the Thai ethnic group. This is a favorable condition and potential for Van Xuan to develop community tourism, contributing to the construction of advanced new rural areas, maintaining its position as the leading commune in the "5 Xuan" cluster of Thuong Xuan district.

Promote tourism development

In addition to the Nang Han festival, Thuong Xuan district also has the Cua Dat festival (Cua Dat); the new rice festival; the boat racing festival. Many traditional cultural beauties are preserved by ethnic minorities through costumes, cuisine, housing, rituals... In Xuan Le and Van Xuan communes, a brocade weaving cooperative has been established to restore and promote the cultural identity of the Thai ethnic group. In Ma village (Thanh Xuan quarter), Thuong Xuan town and Vin village, Bat Mot commune, thanks to promoting its potential and advantages, has become an attractive community tourism destination in Thuong Xuan.

Among ethnic minorities, many typical and advanced examples regularly propagate and mobilize compatriots to preserve the customs, practices, and fine traditions of their people, actively participate in building cultural life, cultural activities, sports, festivals, and building cultural families and studious clans... Specifically, Ms. Ha Thi Hoa, Thai ethnic group, President of the Women's Union of Ngoc Phung commune, always actively mobilizes members to contribute and support working days and assets to build village cultural houses; organize cultural, artistic, sports activities, establish clubs to attract members to participate, and teach traditional culture and sports such as khap singing, throwing con, tug of war...

In Xuan Le commune, Ms. Vi Thi Luyen, President of the Commune Women's Union, always propagates, mobilizes, and supports women in economic development, establishing a brocade weaving cooperative in Xuan Le commune with the desire to restore and preserve the cultural identity of the Thai ethnic group, serving the lives of people in the village. Propagating to people to implement the model of groups growing mulberry, raising silkworms, and collecting silk to be proactive in raw materials for brocade weaving, creating jobs and increasing income for households; planting cinnamon, building cinnamon nurseries in Lien Son, Xuan Son, and Bong Nang villages.

In Ma village (Thanh Xuan quarter), Thuong Xuan town, Ha Thi Tuyen's family is one of the first households to do community tourism. Ma village has 54 households, more than 300 people, the village has a pristine beauty imbued with the cultural identity of the Thai ethnic group, the people preserve traditional crafts such as embroidery, brocade weaving, and weaving. Currently, the village has more than 40 ancient stilt houses being preserved and maintained. Ma village has established a traditional art troupe specializing in performing and introducing to tourists traditional dances and songs of the Thai ethnic group. The potentials and strengths of Ma village contribute to improving people's lives, promoting socio-economic development in the locality.

Mr. Le Huy Giap, Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Thuong Xuan district, said: In recent years, Thuong Xuan district has promoted traditional festivals and ranked cultural heritages; preserved the good traditional cultural values ​​of the Thai and Muong people, associated with building families, communities, and developing tourism; implemented village covenants well, eliminated costly bad customs; and built cultural and sports families. In particular, Project 6 on Preserving and promoting the fine traditional cultural values ​​of ethnic minorities associated with tourism development under the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2030 period, Phase 1 from 2021-2025 according to Decision 1719/QD-TTg dated October 14, 2021 of the Prime Minister, implemented in Thuong Xuan district has contributed to creating positive changes in preserving and maintaining traditional cultural values.

Up to now, the cultural and spiritual life of the people has been constantly improved. In 2024, 9 cultural houses were invested in renovation and repair; the number of households recognized as cultural families reached 74.2%; the number of villages, hamlets and residential groups recognized as cultural reached 67.7%, exceeding the plan by 2.6%; effectively implementing national target programs associated with the Project to Preserve the language, writing, folk performing arts and typical festival activities of the Thai ethnic group through models and traditional cultural clubs; festival activities have many positive changes, creating a good impression on visitors from all over the world through the organization of the Cua Dat Temple Festival, especially the ceremony to receive the National Intangible Cultural Heritage (Han Festival).

In the period of 2024-2029, Thuong Xuan district will continue to exploit its potential and advantages, develop its socio-economic development rapidly and sustainably; preserve and promote the fine traditional cultural identity of ethnic minorities associated with tourism development, contributing to the implementation of the project on developing community tourism in Thuong Xuan district to 2025, with a vision to 2030. Strive that by 2029, over 50% of villages will have traditional cultural and artistic teams operating regularly and with quality.
