China increases purchases, lychee prices reach record high
Many Chinese traders have arrived in Bac Giang to buy large quantities of lychees and transport them back to their home country for consumption. As a result, the average price of lychees has skyrocketed to a record high.
At some weighing points in Hong Giang commune (Luc Ngan), Thanh Ha lychee and main-season lychee are purchased at prices ranging from 65,000-85,000 VND/kg, depending on the type.
In previous seasons, when the main season began, lychee prices would cool down due to abundant supply. This year, on the contrary, the current price is more expensive than at the beginning of the season, compared to the same period last year, the price is 3-4 times higher. Notably, the price of this fruit is forecast to continue to increase sharply when the supply is limited.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tho, Deputy Head of the Planning and Finance Department, Department of Industry and Trade of Bac Giang province, admitted that lychee has never been so expensive. If calculated on average, this year's lychee price is the highest in history since lychee became a large-scale commercial crop in the locality. (See details)
Meanwhile, this is the second consecutive year that Luc Ngan litchis have been sold at the Gourmet Market supermarket chain - Thailand's leading supermarket chain.
According to VTV, lychees were officially imported under a contract between the importer and the grower since September last year, packaged in 1kg boxes and priced at 359 baht/kg (about 250,000 VND/kg). Thailand also grows lychees, but Vietnamese lychees are considered much tastier.
Imported Australian tangerines flood Vietnamese markets at super cheap prices
As one of the three most imported fruits to Vietnam, tangerines are flooding the market. During the scorching hot summer days, this cooling fruit is sold at a super cheap price.
Australian tangerines are being sold everywhere on the market. In addition to the large-sized tangerines sold for around 100,000 VND/kg, the small-sized tangerines packed in boxes or bags weighing 800 grams/bag are quite cheap, only ranging from 35,000-60,000 VND/kg.
According to the seller, this price is cheaper than Vietnamese oranges, and even cheaper than Wenzhou oranges imported from China - a type of orange that has a similar appearance and flavor to Australian tangerines. This imported tangerine has a shiny yellow skin, plump segments, and is very sweet. (See details)
Specialty avocado price 034 record low
Although it is the main harvest season for avocado 034 in Lam Dong province, the selling price of this once-feverish specialty is at a record low.
According to the reporter of Tin Tuc Newspaper, in some areas with a lot of 034 avocados such as Bao Lam, Di Linh, Lam Ha districts..., the selling price at the garden ranges from 10,000-13,000 VND/kg, lower than the same period in 2023 (from 15,000-20,000 VND/kg). Although the selling price is low, the consumption market inside and outside Lam Dong province is not attractive, even though it is the peak summer tourist season.
The reason is that the area and output of 034 avocado have increased rapidly in recent years, while the consumption market is not stable.
Pepper prices hit historic high, how much does Vietnam have left to export?
In the first half of June, the price of Vietnamese pepper increased dramatically, reaching a peak of 180,000 VND/kg on June 12. Immediately after that, the price of this commodity, considered as “black gold” of Vietnam, plummeted. Recently, the price of pepper has regained its upward momentum, currently trading around 156,000-162,000 VND/kg.
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, Vietnam's pepper output in 2024 is estimated to decrease by 10% compared to 2023, to only about 170,000 tons - the lowest level in the past 5 years. Statistics from the General Department of Customs show that by the end of May 2024, Vietnam had exported nearly 110,000 tons of pepper of all kinds, earning 469 million USD.
If we do not count the inventory carried over from last year, our country still has about 60,000 tons of pepper to export in the remaining months of the year. (See details)
Raw shrimp prices in Ben Tre drop sharply
According to Tin Tuc Newspaper, the price of raw shrimp in Ben Tre province continues to decrease sharply, making it difficult for high-tech shrimp farmers in coastal areas to invest in expanding farming areas.
Mr. Dang Van Bay, one of the billionaires in high-tech shrimp farming in Thanh Phong commune, Thanh Phu district, Ben Tre province, said that the low price of shrimp has caused many difficulties for farmers. The price of 100 shrimp per kg is only about 70,000 VND; the price of 30 shrimp per kg is more than 115,000 VND, a decrease of 40,000 VND per kg compared to 2 months ago. With the above prices, shrimp farmers in Ben Tre do not make any profit.
Shrimp buyers in Binh Dai town, Binh Dai district, Ben Tre province said that currently, domestic shrimp prices have decreased due to "supply exceeding demand". Shrimp is in season, the weather is favorable so the harvest is large. Along with that, companies purchasing shrimp for export have reduced production, causing domestic shrimp prices to drop sharply compared to nearly two months ago.
Crab prices increase but supply is lacking
For nearly 2 weeks now, according to VNA, the price of commercial sea crabs in the Tra Vinh province market, especially for crabs with roe and grade 1 meat, has increased by 10,000-30,000 VND/kg compared to early June 2024. Although the price of sea crabs is high, the supply is still lacking compared to market demand.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hai, the owner of a seafood purchasing agency at Tra Vinh provincial market, consumer demand at large restaurants in provinces and cities serving tourists and the Ho Chi Minh City market has increased sharply, but the supply of sea crabs cannot meet demand, especially type I sea crabs and crabs with roe.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Minh, a crab farmer in My Long Nam commune, said that it is currently the middle of the second crab farming season of the year, so the harvested crab output is not as much as in March and April.
Poultry prices fall sharply
Purchasing power has decreased sharply while the supply in poultry farming households is high. This has caused poultry prices to drop sharply. According to VTV, this situation has lasted since after Tet holiday until now, causing livestock farming households to suffer losses.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Van (Tan Hoa commune, Phu Binh district, Thai Nguyen) said that at this time last year, poultry farming brought high profits to households. Traders had already placed orders for chickens that were not yet ready to be sold. Right before Tet, the price of chicken was at 65,000-70,000 VND/kg. At this time, the price of chicken has decreased by 10,000-15,000 VND/kg and consumption is slow.
