Cross-border e-commerce is a trend in export. Enterprises need to proactively adapt to bring Vietnamese goods to the global market.

Great opportunity to export goods

E-commerce Cross-border trade has become an inevitable trend. Especially, in the context of Vietnam's increasingly deep integration with the world economy, participating in the system Online export and import, cross-border e-commerce channels are effective solutions for Vietnamese enterprises to bring Vietnamese brands to consumers in many markets around the world.

In an effort to boost exports, cross-border e-commerce is also emphasized as helping businesses reduce operating and operational costs compared to traditional expansion through foreign branches; at the same time, it helps optimize goods management, warehouse management and delivery, taking advantage of global shipping partners and smart supply chain management solutions, helping to save on shipping costs and quickly meet customers' delivery needs.

At a recent online seminar with the theme "Developing e-commerce - Opportunities, motivations and challenges", Ms. Lai Viet Anh - Deputy Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said that according to some market information reports, cross-border e-commerce accounts for about 20-22% of the value of global e-commerce, with an estimated growth rate of 2.3 times that of e-commerce. Vietnam is an export economy, with strengths in textiles, footwear, rice, agricultural products… Accordingly, potential export through channel Cross-border e-commerce is still huge ” - Mrs. Lai Viet Anh said.

Prof. Dr. Tran Minh Tuan - Director of the Department of Digital Economy and Digital Society (Ministry of Information and Communications) also pointed out that cross-border e-commerce currently has many great development opportunities, especially since Vietnam is close to a very large market, the Chinese market, we have many opportunities to export agricultural products to China.

In addition, according to the Director of the Department of Digital Economy and Digital Society, Vietnamese digital technology enterprises have also built B2B e-commerce platforms, connecting with the world's major e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Alibaba, Timo... so that goods on Vietnam's e-commerce platforms will also appear on the world's major e-commerce platforms, thereby connecting buyers directly with sellers as well as manufacturers.

According to statistics from Amazon Global Selling, through Amazon's platform, Vietnamese goods have the opportunity to reach more than 2 billion people online each year in markets in North America, Europe and many other countries such as Australia, Japan, Singapore, India, etc. Notably, in the past 5 years, the number of products sold by Vietnamese businesses on Amazon has increased by more than 300%. Thousands of Vietnamese small and medium-sized enterprises are currently exporting through Amazon, with the number of businesses with annual revenue of over 1 million USD skyrocketing nearly 10 times.

Solution to seize the opportunity

Currently, cross-border e-commerce is opening up great opportunities for businesses to promote the export of goods. However, in the coming time, to be able to effectively utilize this export channel, in addition to having a favorable legal corridor, businesses need to proactively adapt to market regulations.

According to economic expert Vo Tri Thanh, at international conferences, there has been more discussion about digital trade and economics. In particular, there has been more mention of large-scale, large-item stories. Therefore, in addition to perfecting what we are doing, we need to do better to catch up with the development trend of the market, and at the same time, we must prepare for the stronger development trend of global e-commerce activities.

Mr. Vo Tri Thanh further emphasized that the export of Vietnamese goods and services in general and Vietnamese e-commerce in particular are still fundamentally dominated by foreign brands and distribution channels. “Therefore, just like import and export in general, Vietnamese enterprises must strive to make a breakthrough, focusing on building Vietnamese brands and having the foundation to connect with large international platforms. " - Mr. Thanh recommended.

In addition, this economic expert stated that Vietnam currently has 5,000 - 6,000 OCOP products, however, the number of exported goods is still very small. Therefore, to promote exports, especially online exports, it is necessary to ensure quality, traceability of origin, scale, and goods that meet the trend of green, safe, and humane consumption. In particular, “Goods must be attached to Vietnamese stories, that is Vietnamese people, Vietnamese culture, Vietnamese traditions, Vietnamese ways of doing things ”- Mr. Thanh said.

From the perspective of the management agency, Ms. Lai Viet Anh emphasized that the trend of green and sustainable consumption is a prominent trend worldwide. Therefore, in order for Vietnamese goods to reach the global market, we need to consider the sustainable development factor. From this perspective, the application of digital technology and digital transformation in e-commerce will also play a certain role. "We must promote digitalization of the production process in the value chain, applying it to each stage of the production process... to enhance the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods in the international market, " Ms. Lai Viet Anh emphasized.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Tran Minh Tuan further pointed out that the core issue of cross-border e-commerce is the use and application of digital technology to trace products from the growing area, from the place of production related to environmental issues, reducing carbon emissions as well as the logistics service system. On the other hand, promoting digitalization, connecting data directly with relevant agencies as well as Customs and Border Guards of the host countries will help businesses effectively utilize e-commerce to export goods.
