Thai authorities have arrested 1,607 drug suspects in six northern provinces this year and seized a large amount of the addictive substance.

Specifically, from December 1, 2023 to September 8, 2024, Task Force 35 (the Northern Thailand drug suppression unit) participated in 44 anti-drug operations, eliminated 31 suspects, seized 256 million crystal meth pills, 2.68 tons of crystal meth, 375 kg of heroin, 206 kg of raw opium and 21 kg of ketamine in 18 districts of 6 northern provinces, mainly in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.
At a press conference announcing the results of the anti-drug campaign on September 10, Police General Narit Thawornwong - commander of Task Force 35 said that the above goods belonged to two drug rings in Thailand.
The first group includes drug smuggling networks into the southern region of the country and Malaysia. The other group are drug transporters to the central and eastern regions.
Gen Narit added that the target market for meth is mainly Thais, while crystal meth, ketamine and heroin target foreign users.
Meanwhile, it is estimated that at least 80 million crystal meth pills and 1,000 kilograms of crystal meth are being stored in warehouses just across the border in northern Thailand.
