Promoting a culture of diversity and inclusion in businesses

On the afternoon of August 24, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Business Network for Women's Empowerment (VBCWE) collaborated with Deloitte Vietnam to organize the Workshop "Culture of diversity and inclusion in emerging enterprises".

Attending the workshop were representatives of the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD) and nearly 50 business leaders, representatives of business associations, social organizations and members of the VCBWE network.

Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) culture is an inevitable trend and a goal that many businesses pursue on the journey of sustainable development. D&I is an important element associated with the S - Social factor in ESG (Environment - Society - Governance), in which businesses build an equal environment for employees, an environment that makes them proud, confident and most themselves, regardless of gender, family circumstances, or starting point of each person.

Women's economic empowerment is not only a fundamental aspect of promoting gender equality, but also an important factor in enhancing business competitiveness, promoting inclusive economic growth and building a just society.

In the ASEAN region, there are many programs that aim to invest in women, using innovative methods to improve women’s economic participation as employees and entrepreneurs, and impacting the enabling environment for women’s economic empowerment such as: Gender Equality in the Workplace (WGE) Program; Impact Investing for Women-Owned Small and Medium Enterprises; and Impacting Gender Norms. One of the programs implemented in Vietnam that bears the mark of VBCWE is the WGE program.

Over the past 5 years in Vietnam, with the support of the Australian Government through the Investing in Women project, VBCWE has made pioneering marks in promoting gender equality in the workplace, focusing on the private economic sector, contributing to creating equal and fair values ​​for workers.

The network has further promoted the diversity and inclusion (D&I) factor, increased employment opportunities and job quality for women, expanded and targeted female workers in industrial zones, women with disabilities, women-owned businesses, job opportunities associated with child care and support policies; training and improving soft skills and technology so that workers can accelerate and keep up with employment trends in the context of developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is the goal of VBCWE in the next 5-year development period. This is also one of the goals that VBCSD is implementing.

Speaking at the Workshop, Ms. Ha Thu Thanh, President of VBCWE emphasizing the role of VBCWE in the 5-year period: “VBCWE's mission is to promote the Sustainable Development of Enterprises & Business Community by connecting and converging pioneering enterprises in creating and honoring the values ​​of diverse and inclusive culture in corporate culture. Accompanying enterprises to build a happy working environment through developing a diverse and inclusive culture associated with gender equality.

At the same time, spread the values ​​of inclusive and gender-equal culture in the workplace to the business community, inspire and influence to change the awareness and actions of businesses, bring values ​​associated with sustainable development of human resources on the journey of sustainable development for businesses in Vietnam."

At the workshop, Ms. Tran Thuy Trang - Human Resources Director at Deloitte Vietnam also provided perspectives and updates on human resource development trends associated with D&I factors as well as opportunities and job quality for women in the age of AI.

Ms. Trang also mentioned the benefits of building a diverse and inclusive working environment for an employee and the business's work of attracting and retaining talent, along with the latest research on the importance of diversity in shaping business strategy.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Tam - Human Resource Development Director at PNJ shared the challenges and opportunities that diverse human resource management and development brings. Accordingly, Mr. Tam believes that building an open and accepting working environment will promote employee creativity and performance.

Other speakers discussed and shared about a number of issues: The strategic role of building a culture of diversity and inclusion for the sustainable development of each enterprise; the crucial role of the leadership in promoting a culture of diversity and inclusion; the importance of flexibility and connectivity that a culture of diversity and inclusion brings in the modern supply chain....

At the end of the Workshop, Ms. Ha Thu Thanh, President of VBCWE once again affirming VBCWE's mission of connecting, sharing and spreading values ​​of gender equality, cultural diversity and inclusion to the business community. Ms. Thanh Sharing, VBCWE will continue to implement workshop programs with this topic to help businesses gradually build and optimize the benefits of gender equality, diverse culture and inclusion.

Established in January 2018 under the Investing in Women project funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, VBCWE is a pioneering and professional organization in connecting, supporting and promoting the building of a diverse and inclusive culture associated with gender equality in the workplace - an important foundation for sustainable development for businesses in Vietnam.
