Earning 3.84 billion USD, fruits and vegetables set a historical record

Preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs show that in the first half of September alone, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports earned 293.4 million USD, a sharp increase of 187% compared to the first half of September 2022.

As of September 15, the total export turnover reached 3.84 billion USD, a sharp increase of 67% compared to the same period last year. Accordingly, this year's fruit and vegetable export officially set a historical record when surpassing the 3.81 billion USD mark of 2018.

According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, by the end of September this year, fruit and vegetable export turnover reached over 4.1 billion USD, an increase of 69.1% over the same period last year.

Of these, durian, banana and dragon fruit contributed greatly to the growth. In particular, durian, from the 4th position in the fruit group, has risen to the top in terms of export, surpassing banana and dragon fruit to join the “billion-dollar export club” of the agricultural sector. Durian is forecast to soon reach the export turnover of 1.5 billion USD next month.

Notably, China is importing the most Vietnamese fruits and vegetables, with a total turnover of 2.3 billion USD in the first 8 months of 2023, up 134% over the same period in 2022 and accounting for 64% of the market share. The boom in orders from this market of more than 1.4 billion people has helped our country's fruit and vegetable export turnover set a record, even though the year is still more than 3 months away.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that fruit and vegetable exports increased sharply thanks to increased purchases from other countries, especially the Chinese market.

In the fourth quarter of 2023, our country's fruit export output is estimated to reach 4.1 million tons - the quarter with the highest output of the year. Traditionally, fruit and vegetable exports often reach a high level in the last months of the year thanks to strong market demand. Therefore, the abundant fruit supply will meet upcoming export orders well.

Mr. Nguyen forecasts that fruit and vegetable exports could reach more than 5.5 billion USD this year.

Algeria requires some imported foods to be Halal certified

The Vietnam Trade Office in Algeria informed that on September 21, the Algerian Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production announced a list of foods imported into the country that must have Halal certification.

Halal in Arabic means lawful, permitted based on fully meeting the requirements and in accordance with the standards, values, and sacred laws of Islam or according to the standards of the Quran.

According to the Vietnam Trade Office in Algeria, this list includes meat and products of animal origin, canned meat, animal fats, confectionery, including chocolate, cakes and biscuits as well as food additives of animal origin or containing ingredients suspected of being non-Halal due to the method of purchasing, pre-packaging and reselling in their original state or serving the food industry.

Dairy products, including caseinate and cheeses intended for processing, serving the food industry and products intended for infants, must also comply with this regulation.

Tuna exports to the US and EU accelerate again

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in August 2023, Vietnam's tuna exports reached more than 87 million USD, down 5% over the same period in 2022. This is the lowest decrease and the highest value since the beginning of 2023.

In the first 8 months of this year, tuna exports reached 545 million USD, down 25% over the same period.

In August this year, tuna exports to major markets fluctuated. The highlight was the growth of the US market after a period of continuous decline.

Data shows that tuna exports to the US in the month increased slightly by 2% year-on-year, mainly due to the growth of canned tuna (+24% year-on-year).

However, due to the sharp decline in the first months of the year, in the first 8 months of 2023, tuna exports to the US still decreased by 45% compared to the same period, reaching nearly 208 million USD.

In the EU, this market is showing signs of acceleration again as Vietnam's tuna export turnover to this market has increased by 37% over the same period.

In contrast, tuna exports to Israel fell sharply in August, down 57% year-on-year, despite previous good growth. Of which, processed and canned tuna products to this market recorded a decrease of 82% year-on-year. However, thanks to the good growth in the previous period, in the first 8 months of 2023, tuna exports to Israel still increased by 50%.

In the CPTPP market bloc, exports to member markets have yet to show signs of improvement. Exports to Japan, Canada and Mexico all fell sharply in August, by -53%, -49% and -14% respectively compared to the same period last year.

Up to now, according to VASEP, Vietnam's tuna exports are gradually narrowing the decline compared to the same period last year. However, it is very difficult for exports to key markets such as the US, Japan or Canada to return to the same period last year.

However, the decline in global raw tuna prices is boosting demand from importers in the final months of the year. Therefore, it is expected that tuna exports in the coming months will return to the same level as in the same period in 2022.
