On the sidelines of the 43rd ASEAN Summit taking place in Jakarta (Indonesia), Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with leaders of Malaysia, Vietnam, South Korea, the Philippines and Australia.

Specifically, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had meetings with host country President Joko Widodo, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
During the meetings, the leaders expressed their desire to cooperate with Canada through trade, immigration and to take advantage of the country's know-how in addressing the transition to green energy, the Canada Press news agency reported.
The meetings took place during Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's September 4-6 visit to Indonesia, during which he pledged to continue developing relations with the Southeast Asian nation.
Speaking at the ASEAN-Canada Summit on September 5, Mr. Trudeau emphasized: "The warm welcome and constructive conversations we are having in Indonesia are a testament to Canada's strong friendship and growing relationship with the Indo-Pacific region.
Together, we are creating good jobs, protecting peace and security, and building a better future for people on both sides of the Pacific.”
Prime Minister Trudeau said Canada expects to finalize a free trade agreement with ASEAN following the establishment of the Canada-ASEAN strategic partnership. Ottawa will open an export development office in Jakarta and appoint a trade representative for the Indo-Pacific region to help Canadian businesses enter new markets in the region. Five Canadian trade missions will soon be sent to the region, including to the Philippines and Vietnam.
This is the fourth ASEAN Summit that Prime Minister Trudeau has attended, following summits in 2017, 2018 and 2022.
After concluding his activities in Jakarta, the Canadian leader will travel to Singapore on September 6, where he is expected to meet with his counterpart Lee Hsien Loong and business leaders, before heading to New Delhi, India, to attend the G20 Summit.
According to the Canada Press , an important goal of Mr. Trudeau's three-nation tour is to build relationships with leaders in Asia. Canada Ottawa wants to contribute to the region's rapid growth, in the context of the green energy transition process in which the country considers itself a key player.
Canada is negotiating separate trade agreements with India, Indonesia and the ASEAN bloc.
The country announced its Indo-Pacific strategy in November 2022.
