Canadian Prime Minister strongly criticizes US tariff policy

(CLO) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday (March 4) strongly condemned the new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on the country.

As we all know, President Trump imposed a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Canada and Mexico. Canada immediately responded, triggering a trade war between the two countries, which are close allies, threatening the billions of dollars worth of trade that takes place between the two countries every day.

In a scathing speech in Ottawa, Prime Minister Trudeau directly told Mr Trump that while he considered the US President "a smart guy", the decision to impose the tariffs was an extremely "foolish" move.

Mr. Trump claimed that the tariffs were necessary to force Canada to act against the flow of undocumented immigrants and the smuggling of fentanyl across the border.

However, Mr. Trudeau completely rejected this reason, asserting that Canada is not a significant source of the above problems in the US and calling Mr. Trump's statement about fentanyl "completely false".

Asked about Mr Trump's motives for imposing tariffs, Prime Minister Trudeau said the US president, who has repeatedly hinted at turning Canada into the 51st US state, "wants to see the Canadian economy collapse so it's easier to annex us".

“The United States has launched a trade war against Canada,” Trudeau said. “Canadians are reasonable people. We are polite. But we will not back down from a fight.”

Mr Trudeau stressed that Canada's retaliatory tariffs would remain in place until the US removed its tariffs. "We don't want that to happen," he added.

Prime Minister Trudeau warned Americans that a trade war with Canada would be devastating for the US economy: "Your government has chosen to do this to you."
