At the meeting, Ambassador Marcro Della Seta congratulated the newly appointed Deputy Minister and discussed the key areas and important cooperation contents that the Embassy wants to implement in the coming time to promote the development of the Vietnam - Italy strategic partnership. Mr. Marcro Della Seta affirmed that Italy always attaches importance to and wishes to further strengthen the cooperative relationship with Vietnam, especially in the fields of economy, trade, industry and energy.
The Deputy Minister and the Ambassador shared specific contents of mutual interest, including: promoting the growth of bilateral trade turnover, building a cooperation plan in the industrial sector, especially high-tech industries, precision mechanics; energy, especially renewable energy, new energy. Attracting investment from Italy to Vietnam as well as improving the investment and business environment in Vietnam were also topics discussed by the two sides. The Ambassador thanked the Ministry of Industry and Trade for creating conditions for SIMEST - the Italian company for Italian enterprises abroad (under Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, the Italian National Promotion Organization) together with the Chamber of Commerce and Italian enterprises to attend Vietnam International Sourcing 2024 on June 8-10, 2024. Italian enterprises highly appreciated the event and SIMEST will open a representative office in Ho Chi Minh City in the near future.
On this occasion, the two sides also discussed Vietnam's participation in the G7 Trade Ministers' Meeting in Italy at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy Antonio Tanjani to Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien. Both sides agreed that this is a valuable opportunity for Italy and Vietnam to affirm their roles in global trade and also an opportunity for the countries to work together to build a sustainable and stable international supply chain.
At the end of the meeting, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long affirmed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to closely coordinate with the Italian Embassy in promoting economic, trade, industrial and energy relations between Vietnam and Italy, especially carefully preparing the content for the 9th Session of the Joint Committee on Economic Cooperation between the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy with the participation of relevant ministries and branches of the two sides scheduled for the fourth quarter in Hanoi.
Italy is currently Vietnam's third largest trading partner in the European Union. On the other hand, Vietnam is also Italy's largest trading partner in ASEAN with positive growth in bilateral trade turnover. According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in the period 2017 - 2023, trade exchange between Vietnam and Italy recorded positive growth; in particular, the export rate of Vietnamese goods to Italy reached an average of 9%/year, and Vietnam's trade surplus with Italy has continuously increased in recent times. According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in the first 5 months of 2024, the total import-export turnover between Vietnam and Italy reached 2.85 billion USD, up 9.2% over the same period in 2023. Of which, exports to Italy reached 2.14 billion USD, up 10.3%; imports from Italy reached 0.71 billion USD, up 6.0%. The trade surplus with Italy reached 1.43 billion USD, higher than the 1.27 billion USD in the same period in 2023. Italy currently ranks 33rd out of 146 countries and territories investing in Vietnam with 153 projects with a total capital of more than 536 million USD (according to statistics for the first 5 months of 2024 of the Foreign Investment Agency, Ministry of Planning and Investment), this is a modest number compared to the potential of the two countries. |
