Italy captain: "It's painful to be eliminated from Euro 2024"

Italy lost 0-2 to Switzerland in the Euro 2024 round of 16 match last night in Berlin (Germany). This defeat caused the reigning Euro champions to be eliminated from the tournament.

After the match, Donnarumma said: "We apologize to all Italian football fans for this defeat. The result is very disappointing, but in my opinion, this is a reasonable defeat."

"I have no excuses for this defeat, we played poorly throughout the match. The team lost possession too easily and left many gaps for the opponents to exploit. On the other hand, we did not put pressure on their goal," added goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

According to the goalkeeper and captain of the Italian team, the traditional strengths of Italian football were not present in last night's match with Switzerland.

Donnarumma shared: "Our best qualities were not shown here, perseverance, stubbornness did not appear. We lost and accepted defeat. I am in pain because of this defeat when we were eliminated from the Euro."

"In the first half, Switzerland kept the ball and we had difficulties. In the second half, we conceded a goal too early, so things were even more difficult. The defeat of the Italian team in this year's tournament was inevitable," the goalkeeper, who plays for Paris Saint Germain (France), frankly said.

Italy's early exit from Euro 2024 once again reflects the bleak reality of this footballing tradition. In two consecutive World Cups in 2018 and 2022, Italy did not appear in the final round.

Italy's Euro 2020 victory is just a rare bright spot in the midst of a recession in football since the 2014 World Cup.
