In the second round of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's 2024 competency assessment exam, with a score of 1,116/1,200, Tran Pham Long Nghia, a 12th grade student at Tran Phu High School (Tan Phu District) excelled over the first round's valedictorian (1,076 points - PV) and became the candidate with the highest score in this year's competency assessment exam.

Becoming valedictorian thanks to the habit of going to bed early and waking up early

After the first exam with a score of 952, although he was quite satisfied, because he wanted to achieve a higher result to have more opportunities, Nghia was determined to review and retake the exam in the second round. Thanks to his efforts, Nghia has achieved worthy results with a near-perfect score and became the valedictorian in this exam. Sharing his feelings when he found out he was the valedictorian, Nghia said: "I was very happy and excited but also extremely surprised because I didn't think I was the valedictorian". With his strengths in natural science subjects, Nghia had difficulty with the social knowledge section. However, thanks to his calmness, Nghia handled the exam quite well.

Talking about the secret to taking the test, Nghia shared: “When entering the exam room, there will be 3 factors that influence: psychology, how to allocate time to do the test, and the score target. I think you should keep a relaxed mentality and do the test to the best of your ability because worrying won’t solve anything. To have a relaxed mentality, you must know how to allocate time effectively. Because this is a 150-minute test, I determined that each question should not take more than 2 minutes. Because if I stop on a question for too long, I won’t have time to check it again. I have a habit of checking my answers after finishing the test to avoid mistakes. Setting a score target will help me determine which parts I am sure of, and I just do my best without worrying too much.” Nghia said that he had determined his goal to take the entrance exam to member schools of Ho Chi Minh City National University, so he had a review plan early. “I always set clear goals, plan effective study, create a weekly schedule and always maintain my passion for books. I always maintain parallel practice according to the high school graduation and competency assessment exam questions,” Nghia shared. In addition to class hours, Nghia spends most of his time at home reviewing old knowledge. Unlike his peers who often have the habit of staying up late to study, Nghia is the opposite. The young man said that he does not force himself to stay up late but always pays attention to his health, so he chooses to go to bed early and wake up early. “I usually go to bed at 10 p.m. and wake up at 5 a.m. I started this habit at the beginning of grade 12. Before, I also stayed up late to do homework, but my body was very tired the next day and my studying was not effective. Since then, I have not stayed up late anymore,” the valedictorian said.

Valedictorian also has times when he is... playful.

Nghia said that sometimes he feels stressed about studying but always keeps a positive mindset. “I think that just trying my best is enough, and not putting too much emphasis on the results. I always appreciate my efforts and self-development to move towards better things,” Nghia said.

Nghia always appreciates his own efforts and development, not just focusing on achievements.

Although he was an excellent student for 12 consecutive years, the humble valedictorian said that he was not a very outstanding face in the class. Nghia also confessed that sometimes he was too playful and lazy to study, but at those times he would tell himself that he needed to rest to regain energy. “I often entertain myself by listening to music and exercising. I used to be addicted to video games, but since I was in 12th grade, I have limited it a lot because I found it not good and it took up a lot of time. In general, playing video games has both advantages and disadvantages, so you have to know how to control yourself,” Nghia said. Nghia's most outstanding subject is chemistry and in 12th grade, the male student won third prize at the city level. With the desire to study data science, Nghia set his sights on Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. Nghia's homeroom teacher, Ms. Chu Thi Kim Huong, commented that Nghia is an excellent student in the class and has the ability to think about natural sciences. “Not only good at natural sciences, Nghia also knows how to balance his time to improve his knowledge in social sciences. As a result, he was honored to be recognized as the best student in the class in the 2023-2024 school year. And recently, he was the valedictorian in the competency assessment exam,” said Ms. Huong. According to Ms. Huong, in addition to his excellent academic performance, Nghia also actively participates in school and class activities. “Nghia's achievements and efforts are an example for other students to follow and strive for,” said Ms. Huong. With the above achievements, the valedictorian feels more at ease before the upcoming high school graduation exam, but Nghia does not neglect his studies. Currently, Nghia is still busy studying hard in the hope of getting good results in the 2024 high school graduation exam.
