In Hanoi, Do Hai Nam, a student from Newton Secondary and High School, became the top scorer in the entrance exam for the 10th grade at Hanoi University of Education's High School for Gifted Students with 35.75/40 points.
Last night, the Hanoi University of Education's High School for Gifted Students announced the cutoff scores for its seven specialized classes. Hai Nam scored 10 in the general Mathematics (also known as General Math), 10 in the specialized Mathematics, and 5.75 in Literature.
With the admission score calculated as the sum of the general Math, Literature, and specialized subject scores multiplied by a factor of two, up to a maximum of 40, Nam achieved 35.75 points, the highest among more than 6,100 candidates this year. Compared to the cutoff score for the specialized Math class, Nam exceeded it by 9.25 points.

The second highest-scoring candidate this year is Nguyen Thi Hong Ngoc, with 35.5 points, also applying for the specialized Math class. Following her is Le Tuan Khang, the top scorer in the specialized Physics class, with 34.75 points, the third highest score in the entire school. Compared to the cutoff score, Khang exceeded it by 11 points. The remaining two candidates in the top 5 highest scores are from the specialized Computer Science class, both achieving 34.5 points.
Considering each specialized subject group, the top-scoring students all achieved scores above 32.15 points.

This year, Hanoi University of Education's High School for Gifted Students is recruiting 315 students, attracting over 6,100 applicants. The English specialized class has the highest number of applicants – 2,049, with a competition ratio of 1/29.3, meaning only one student out of every 30 is admitted. Next is the Literature specialized class with a competition ratio of 1/28.5. Other specialized classes have competition ratios ranging from 1/10.2 to 1/19.8, with the Biology specialized class having the lowest ratio.
The High School for Gifted Students affiliated with Hanoi University of Education is a branch of Hanoi University of Education. Founded in 1966, its predecessor was a "special mathematics class" for students from evacuation areas, later becoming a specialized high school system for mathematics and computer science. Students from the school have won 60 medals in international Olympiads.
