Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler said on June 17 that Sweden could become a member state of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) similar to Finland if it fully fulfills its commitments to Ankara.
Speaking to reporters after a NATO meeting in Brussels, Belgium, Minister Güler affirmed that he supports the military bloc 's "open door" policy.
“We have demonstrated our sensitivity to the fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. We have also stressed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations must be addressed without discrimination. We have affirmed our determination to fight all terrorist organizations, including the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), the Islamic State (IS) and al-Qaeda. We hope to receive support from all member states in this regard,” said Güler.
The statement came after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sweden needed to take more steps to address its concerns before Ankara would accept Stockholm's NATO membership.
Both Türkiye and Sweden have recently agreed to hold further discussions on Stockholm's accession to NATO in the near future./.
