Eating too much fat can lead to weight gain and other negative health effects. A new study has found a nutrient that can help reduce these effects.
One of the times when we like to eat fatty foods the most is when we are stressed. Because stress will push the level of cortisol hormone in the body to increase, thereby increasing cravings, especially foods high in fat and sugar, according to the health website Medical News Today (UK).
Flavanol antioxidants in cocoa and green tea help protect blood vessel function.
Flavanols reduce the negative effects of fat on the vascular system
Research by experts at the University of Birmingham (UK) found that eating fatty foods when stressed will negatively affect blood vessel function and the amount of oxygen to the brain. However, the antioxidant flavanol in cocoa has the effect of helping to protect blood vessel function. Besides cocoa, another food that also contains very high levels of flavanol is green tea.
In the study, the scientists fed volunteers two butter croissants with 10 grams of salted butter, 1.5 slices of cheese, and 250 ml of whole milk. They were then divided into two groups. One group drank a cup of cocoa high in flavanol antioxidants, while the other group drank cocoa low in flavanols.
The volunteers were then asked to complete a mental arithmetic test. The researchers also measured blood flow in the forearm, cardiovascular activity, and oxygen flow to the prefrontal cortex. Completing the tests was stressful, similar to everyday stress.
The study found that people who drank low-flavanol cocoa had impaired blood vessel function during stress, a condition that persisted for up to 90 minutes after the stress ended.
Meanwhile, the group of people who drank cocoa with high flavanols did not experience the same condition. This shows the effect of flavanols on people who are stressed and eat a lot of fat.
Therefore, the study concluded that eating foods high in flavanols may help reduce some of the negative effects of stress and fat on the vascular system. In addition to cocoa and green tea, other foods high in flavanols include oranges, kale, and onions, according to Medical News Today .
