With the successful auction of the right to use the frequency band for 5G, VNPT has become the second network operator in Vietnam to own this important "resource". Previously, on March 8, Viettel successfully auctioned the right to use the 5G radio frequency for the 2,500 - 2,600 MHz frequency band for a term of 15 years. Thus, currently, only MobiFone is the network operator in the Top 3 mobile telecommunications enterprises with the largest market share in Vietnam that still does not own the frequency band for 5G.
The 3,700 - 3,800 MHz band (C2 band block) is a mid-range band that many major carriers in the world are looking for and using thanks to its advantages of large bandwidth, strong speed, low latency and effective investment costs, meeting the requirements of today's advanced 5G networks. Previously, in the auction on March 14, due to the lack of participants according to regulations, it was canceled and had to wait until March 19.
VNPT representative said that winning the auction for the C2 frequency block is very important, allowing businesses to have many options for network equipment, reasonable 5G network deployment costs, meeting the strategy of deploying high-speed 5G network (Vinaphone) in Vietnam.
Two out of three major carriers in Vietnam have the right to use 5G spectrum.
Along with the 3,700 - 3,800 MHz frequency band, VNPT also owns the 1,800 MHz frequency band. "This will be a great advantage in promoting the 5G network in the coming time, while also creating a premise for the development of the 6G network in the future," the network representative emphasized.
After winning the spectrum auction, VNPT will prepare to soon commercialize 5G in Vietnam. A VNPT representative added that to increase the effectiveness of 5G deployment, the unit will implement a model of infrastructure sharing cooperation with the network operator that wins the 3,800 - 3,900 MHz spectrum in the upcoming re-auction. This cooperation not only helps optimize the resources of the network operators but also brings customers the best experience with 5G services.
According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), the higher the frequency band, the larger the bandwidth, the stronger the speed, the lower the latency and the higher the capacity, but the limited coverage and the more easily obstructed by large physical objects (buildings, trees, etc.).
Currently, the world's 5G frequency bands are divided into 4 groups including low frequency bands (under 1,000 MHz), mid-range band 1 (1,000 - 2,600 MHz) and mid-range band 2 (3,500 - 7,000 MHz), and finally high frequency bands (24,000 - 48,000 MHz). Each type has different advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, in reality, most network operators try to use many different frequency bands at the same time to meet customer needs and optimize service quality.
The leaders of the Ministry of Information and Communications have determined that 5G will be officially deployed in Vietnam in 2024. According to the information and communications infrastructure planning for the 2021-2030 period announced by the Ministry, the target by 2025 is for the minimum average download speed of the 5G network in Vietnam to be 100 Mbps. By 2030, the 5G mobile broadband network will cover 99% of the population, aiming to develop the next generation of advanced mobile networks.
"In 2024, the market will be relatively ready for 5G, at least for enterprise customers in the fields of healthcare, oil and gas, transportation, smart cities...", Mr. Mai Liem Truc - former Permanent Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (now the Ministry of Information and Communications), assessed the current status of 5G deployment in Vietnam at an event taking place in December 2023.
