Among the hospitalizations due to laughing gas abuse, there were severe cases: paralysis, unable to walk, unable to hold objects, and respiratory failure due to weak respiratory muscles. Patients poisoned by laughing gas abuse who were treated were mostly between the ages of 18 and under 30.
Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen, Director of the Poison Control Center - Bach Mai Hospital, said that N2O gas has a real and clear impact on the nervous system, cardiovascular system and even the location of action deep in the cells. The way this substance works is similar to the heroin group of drugs, causing regular users to increase the dose. From a few balls each time, it increased to several dozen balls, even several gas cylinders, equivalent to several hundred laughing balloons/day (each gas cylinder is equivalent to the amount of gas of 50 - 60 laughing balloons). Most recently, the Center received a 25-year-old patient for treatment with numbness and weakness in the limbs. This patient has been using laughing balloons for about a year now, inhaling 2 - 3 N2O gas cylinders every day.
Patients poisoned by laughing gas abuse are mostly between the ages of 18 and under 30.
According to Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen, when used in large amounts, N 2 O gas will cause problems such as: acute poisoning, coma, convulsions, arrhythmia, hypotension. In cases of long-term use of laughing gas, patients often suffer from damage to the nervous system, spinal cord, anemia due to bone marrow suppression. When entering the body, N 2 O causes damage to the brain and nerves, causing patients to have sensory disturbances such as numbness, paralysis of all muscles, and affecting vital functions. N 2 O also affects the mind, causing mental disorders due to brain damage. In addition, this gas reduces sexual ability for both men and women.
The Ministry of Health has also confirmed that N2O abuse can cause disorders such as: tingling sensation in the extremities and staggering gait, mood disorders, memory disorders, sleep disorders, cardiovascular effects, hypotension, cerebral ischemia. Using laughing gas containing N2O is especially dangerous when used in combination with other drugs, causing loss of behavioral control, causing disorder and danger to society.
