The principal of Marie Curie Hanoi School plans to spend 100 billion VND to build a boarding school for ethnic minorities in Meo Vac - a poor border district of Ha Giang province.

"Giving a school to a northern border area has been my long-standing wish," said teacher Nguyen Xuan Khang on the afternoon of February 20.

In the plan announced today, Mr. Khang said the new school is called Marie Curie - Meo Vac Ethnic Boarding School, located on a 1.5-hectare plot of land in the center of the district town. The school is expected to be built from 2025 and completed around July 2026, in time to enroll the first class in the 2026-2027 school year.

The estimated construction cost is about 100 billion VND, sponsored by Principal Khang. The District People's Committee will allocate funds to purchase equipment to serve the students' meals and accommodation.

"This is the first time the district has received full funding from an individual to build a school," said Mr. Ngo Manh Cuong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Meo Vac district, Ha Giang province.

According to Mr. Cuong, the district once had a plan to build another boarding school due to the rapid increase in the number of students, but "it could not be done" because of lack of funding. Therefore, Mr. Cuong assessed the project to build Marie Curie - Meo Vac school as very meaningful.

Mr. Khang said the relationship between Marie Curie School and Meo Vac District began in 2021, from the national project to plant one billion trees. The school planted twenty thousand Sa Moc trees in Khau Vai Commune of this district.

In 2022, Marie Curie School will teach English online to 2,600 third-grade students, continuing until they finish primary school.

At the end of November 2023, to solve the shortage of English teachers in Meo Vac, Mr. Khang spent 6-12 billion VND to support 30 local students to study English at university. Each month, a student is supported with 5 million VND, lasting 4 years. Currently, 17 students participate in the project. The district People's Committee will recruit 13 more people to train in the next school year.

Meo Vac is a border district with more than 41 km of border with China, with a population of nearly 100,000 people, belonging to 17 ethnic groups. This is also one of the 74 poor districts in the country, in the period of 2021-2025, according to the Prime Minister's Decision.
