Teacher accused of molesting female student admits fault, resigns

Ho Chi Minh City, a teacher at Nguyen Binh Khiem Secondary School admitted his mistakes and asked for unpaid leave after being accused by a parent of sexually harassing a student.

The information was given by Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, on the afternoon of June 9.

"The accused teacher has admitted his mistakes and asked for unpaid leave, awaiting his retirement as he wishes. He is due to retire on December 1," said Mr. Minh.

The Department of Education and Training requires schools and parents to stabilize students' psychology. When providing counseling, teachers in charge of psychological work need to listen, encourage, respect students' privacy, and support them in the way they want.

According to the People's Committee of Nha Be District, this morning Nguyen Binh Khiem Secondary School suspended the teacher and asked him to report the incident. The District Education Department and the school's principal also met with parents and students to apologize.

The District People's Committee directed relevant units to continue verifying and handling according to regulations.

Previously, a woman said her 8th grade niece was scared and worried because her school's math teacher had molested and sexually harassed her many times.

According to her, at noon on June 8, her niece called for help, saying that a female student in her class had been touched in her private parts by this teacher. She said that she and her friends had been touched on their thighs, chests, and pressed close to each other by the teacher. They did not dare tell their parents because the teacher threatened to "bully" them.

"The girl said the teacher promised to buy her the things she wanted, even asked if she wanted underwear so he could buy it for her," she said, adding that yesterday afternoon the girl's mother went to school to meet the teacher and the principal. However, the teacher said he did not molest her, he just bent down to pick up something and accidentally touched the student's thigh.

Since the beginning of the year, several cases of harassment and abuse in schools have caused outrage. In February, a 52-year-old teacher in Nghe An was arrested after parents accused him of molesting female students. In Dong Thap, police concluded that a teacher had forced five male students to have sex multiple times in April.
