Manchester City are the current Champions League champions, while Sevilla are the 2022/23 Europa League champions.
This is also the first time in history that Manchester City has had the honor of participating in the European Super Cup, while Sevilla is a "regular guest" with 6 appearances.
By participating in Karaiskakis (Greece), Sevilla will play this match for the 7th time, thereby equaling AC Milan's record of participating in the Super Cup; only behind Barcelona (9 times) and Real Madrid (8 times).
Historically, Sevilla also won the Super Cup in 2006 after a convincing 3-0 victory over Barcelona.
To prepare for this important match, Manchester City had a favorable start with a 3-0 victory over Burnley in the Premier League opening match.
In contrast to Man City, Sevilla lost 1-2 to Valencia at home in the opening round of the Spanish National Championship.
Manchester City also have an impressive head-to-head record against Sevilla, winning all four of their meetings in the Champions League.
Talking about the European Super Cup, Spanish strategist Coach Pep Guardiola commented: "Playing in the European Super Cup brings pressure but also pride.
It takes seven years to win the Champions League. It is a very difficult competition. However, winning it did not satisfy us.
The players and I are still very hungry to win more trophies. If someone wants to take the trophy from us, they have to fight hard. Sevilla are a good team. They will be difficult to beat if they play well.
They have won the Europa League many times. It is not easy to achieve that. This team is always very dangerous and we have to be careful. Anyway, I am very happy to face Sevilla."
De Bruyne suffered an injury in the match against Burnley in the opening round of the Premier League. Manager Pep Guardiola confirmed that the Belgian midfielder had a problem with his hamstring and had to undergo surgery.
This player is likely to be out of action for 3-4 months.
