Son La City determined to fulfill commitments to build 'UNESCO Global Learning City'

Six months since officially joining the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, Son La city has had many specific programs, plans, practical activities and creative ways to fulfill the commitments it made to UNESCO.

Organizing the first global learning city competition in Vietnam

On February 14, 2024, Son La city was honored to become a member of UNESCO's Global Network of Learning Cities. In the 6 months since receiving this noble title, Son La city has had many specific programs, plans, practical activities and creative ways to fulfill the commitments made to UNESCO.

The contest “Son La - the global learning city I love” is an initiative to encourage the ethnic community of Son La city to participate in creative activities of a global learning city. This is also the first time a contest to honor and raise awareness of UNESCO’s global learning city has been held in Vietnam.

The competition will take place from July 2024 to October 2024, focusing on the theme of "Lifelong Learning and Climate Change". This is a topic that UNESCO is interested in and promoting globally and is also a very necessary, close and practical topic for Son La city in particular and Vietnam in general, especially in the context of the recent historic storm Yagi.

With its creative approach and humanistic meaning, the contest "Son La - The Global Learning City I Love" has attracted the participation of a large number of people. There are a total of 290 entries for the categories of Songs (08 entries), Paintings (179 entries), Poetry (62 entries), Initiatives, Solutions (41 entries). The entries demonstrate the talent, enthusiasm, love and aspirations of the people of all ethnic groups in the city for a true learning city.

The jury and advisory board selected 38 best works to award prizes on the evening of October 7, 2024, within the framework of the Lifelong Learning Response Week that is taking place enthusiastically in the city.

Strengthening educational cooperation, gradually integrating with international education

With the vision of a global learning city with modern education and constantly integrating with international education, Son La city's education sector is actively coordinating and working with prestigious international organizations to receive and implement the most advanced educational programs and methods in the world locally.

Within the framework of the Lifelong Learning Week 2024, Son La City was honored to receive the Education through Music and Arts Sponsorship Package from the Finnish Creative Education Organization Laulau Learning. After being successfully deployed in developed countries such as Finland, Estonia, the UK, Singapore, etc., this is the first time Laulau Learning has come to Vietnam and Son La will be the pioneer city to apply this outstanding preschool education method.

This is considered a step forward for the city in promoting international cooperation and applying modern educational programs and methods. Representative of Laulau Learning Vietnam, Ms. Tong Lien Anh, specially presented this meaningful gift to Son La City within the framework of meaningful activities of the Global Learning Response Week.

Representing the leaders and people of Son La city, the comrades in the Standing Committee of Son La Provincial Party Committee directly received the meaningful gift from Laulau Learning Vietnam and expressed their gratitude, as well as their expectations for the good educational values ​​that this method brings to children in Son La city. The participation of Laulau Learning will contribute to enriching the learning environment of preschool children, narrowing the gap, helping Son La preschool education access and integrate with international education. This is also one of the very important criteria of a global learning city.

After being announced as a global learning city, Son La city has had many projects and rich educational activities, bringing practical significance not only to the city's education sector, but also creating positive impacts on the entire cultural and social life of local people.

Son La City actively implemented many meaningful activities such as the Title Receiving Ceremony at Northwest Square, a series of activities on Book Day and Reading Culture in April 2024 and most recently, "Lifelong Learning Response Week 2024" lasting from October 1-7, 2024.

Within the framework of the Week, the city and communes, wards and schools have developed plans and organized many meaningful and practical activities such as: Book Fair, introducing new books, creating a space for exchange between authors and readers, promoting reading culture; writing, drawing and storytelling contests based on books and newspapers, stimulating creativity and love of reading books and newspapers; experience sharing workshops; painting exhibitions and book displays at Uncle Ho's Fish Pond yard, Northwest Square...

The city pays special attention to investing in infrastructure, building a system of solid and safe schools, meeting the requirements of teaching and learning with the best quality for students and teachers. During the series of activities of the Week, the city put up a sign to inaugurate the Chieng Den Commune Kindergarten.

With an investment of 20 billion VND, the project started construction in March 2024, including full items such as 2 2-storey classrooms, 14 classrooms, a kitchen, ancillary works and additional teaching and learning equipment.

The school’s opening will be a great motivation for the school to fulfill its mission of caring for and educating children. This school was inaugurated on the occasion of the city joining UNESCO’s global network of learning cities.

Speaking at the Closing Ceremony of the Lifelong Learning Week and the Award Ceremony of the contest "Son La, the Global Learning City I Love", Comrade Ha Trung Chien, Secretary of the City Party Committee - Head of the Steering Committee of the Son La Global Learning City, proposed that, with many solutions, the city will effectively promote the Houses of Wisdom, promote reading culture among the people; the members of the Steering Committee of the Global Learning City, according to their functions and tasks, well implement the 2/2 plan committed to the Steering Committee, determined to help Son La city soon win the UNESCO "Global Learning City" award.
