With a big win over Alaves, Girona returns to the top of the 2023/24 La Liga rankings, leaving many "big guys" behind.

A 3-0 victory over Alaves helped Girona return to the top of La Liga after 17 rounds, above a series of strong opponents such as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico.

On the evening of December 17, Real Madrid won 4-1 against Villarreal, however, Girona will regain the lead in La Liga if they beat Alaves at home on the evening of December 18. The Catalan club has great motivation and plays with great enthusiasm.

Girona quickly put pressure on Alaves' half and in the 23rd minute, the home team opened the scoring. Striker Artem Dovbyk headed in after Yan Couto's shot was blocked by goalkeeper Antonio Sivera.

After the goal, the home team played with excitement, while Alaves only knew how to concentrate on defense. In the 42nd minute, the score was doubled for Girona after a lightning attack.

Man City loanee Yan Couto provided a fine pass for Portu to fire a tricky shot into the visitors' net, helping Girona take a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, Girona continued to dominate the game. 21-year-old Yan Couto won a penalty in the 59th minute and Dovbyk completed his double, sealing a 3-0 win for Girona, while Dovbyk increased his scoring record for the season to 10.

The resounding victory over Alaves helped Girona gain 44 points after 17 rounds, returning to the top of La Liga with 2 points more than Real Madrid. Barcelona and Atletico are respectively behind.
