Songkran is Thailand's traditional New Year, which annually brings in huge revenue for tourism. From April 11 to 16, the peak of the festival, Thailand's six international airports are expected to welcome more than 2.6 million passengers, an increase of more than 28% over the same period last year. Of these, 1.65 million will be international passengers, an increase of 46%, and more than 960,000 will be domestic passengers, an increase of 6.59%.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), this year's 21-day Songkran festival will generate 52.5 billion baht in domestic tourism revenue, up from the 13 billion baht recorded during the usual five-day holiday in 2023, while the average nationwide room occupancy rate will reach 78%, thanks to good bookings in coastal destinations in both the east and south of the country.

TAT Director General Thapanee Kiatphaibool said that this year, TAT supports 6 destinations to celebrate Songkran, namely Bangkok, Songkhla, Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok and Mae Hong Son.

In the first quarter of 2024, Thailand welcomed nearly 9.4 million foreign visitors, an increase of 44% over the same period last year.
