Penalties for violations
Specifically, for the act of running a red light, the driver may face a fine of VND 4,000,000 to VND 6,000,000 according to the provisions of Decree No. 100/2019/ND-CP (amended by Decree 123/2021/ND-CP). In addition to the fine, the violating driver will also have his/her driving license revoked for 1 to 3 months. In case of violation and causing an accident, the license revocation period can last from 2 to 4 months.
For speeding violations, fines are applied based on the severity of the violation.
Exceeding speed from 5km/h to under 10km/h: Fine from 800,000 to 1,000,000 VND.
Exceeding the speed limit from 10km/h to under 20km/h: Fine from 4,000,000 to 6,000,000 VND and driver's license revocation from 1 to 3 months.
Exceeding the speed limit from 20km/h to 35km/h: Fine from 6,000,000 to 8,000,000 VND, with license revocation from 2 to 4 months.
Exceeding the speed limit by more than 35km/h: The heaviest fine is from 10,000,000 to 12,000,000 VND and driver's license revocation from 2 to 4 months.
Fine payment procedures and required documents
When paying the fine, violators need to prepare the following documents: vehicle registration, technical safety and environmental protection inspection certificate, driver's license, and citizen identification card. All documents need to be photocopied to serve the fine payment process.
