The crew of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle conducted a three-week training course from October 4-25 in the Mediterranean to test its operational capabilities after being out of technical operations for nearly four months.
The crew is now beginning logistical preparations ahead of the deployment of the Charles de Gaulle to operate within an aircraft carrier strike group.
A senior French officer revealed that the months-long deployment would take in the eastern Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and "possibly the furthest reaches of the Pacific ", possibly even making a "historic" maiden voyage to Japan and the Philippines.
"This deployment is significant because it marks a significant expansion of France's presence in the Indo-Pacific," said Benjamin Blandin, network coordinator at the Yokosuka Asia- Pacific Research Council.
