Creating a breakthrough for tourism in Uong Bi.

Việt NamViệt Nam31/07/2024

Uong Bi - Dong Trieu - Quang Yen has been identified as a center for cultural and spiritual tourism , and is also one of the four key tourism centers of the province. Along with its strengths in cultural and spiritual tourism, Uong Bi is orienting towards sustainable development based on its unique resources and advantages, aiming to create a breakthrough for local tourism in the future.

A flourishing era with many highlights.

Famous for the Yen Tu historical and scenic site, associated with the birthplace of the Truc Lam Zen sect and the lives and stories of kings and highly virtuous Zen masters in national history, Uong Bi has long developed tourism with various forms of cultural and spiritual tourism, festivals combined with ecotourism. This destination is most crowded during the spring festival season; however, year-round tourism in Yen Tu has also developed strongly, attracting approximately 1 million visitors annually.

Yen Tu is a highlight of tourism in Uong Bi, attracting approximately 1 million visitors annually.

Along with Yen Tu, Uong Bi has developed cultural and spiritual tourism associated with other historical sites in the area by harmoniously promoting tangible and intangible cultural values, creating highlights that attract a large number of tourists from all over, such as: Ba Vang Pagoda, Pho Am Pagoda, Lac Thanh Temple, Hang Son Temple and Pagoda, Den Cong Temple and Co Linh Shrine, Long Khanh Pagoda… According to the assessment of the Department of Tourism in its presentation at the scientific conference "Identifying, preserving and promoting the heritage values of Uong Bi in the sustainable development orientation of Uong Bi City," held in early July, Uong Bi tourism is identified as a breakthrough point in the development of cultural and spiritual tourism with the orientation of developing main tourism products associated with culture, history, spirituality and community and ecological tourism.

Besides focusing on exploiting cultural and spiritual tourism products, Uong Bi City has gradually exploited the potential of ecotourism and community-based tourism products in the area. Currently, the city has the Yen Trung Lake Provincial-level Tourist Area and 6 other recognized tourist destinations, many of which have impressive and attractive natural landscapes such as Binh Huong Peak, Phuong Hoang Hill, and the Phuong Nam riverine area... These tourist areas and scenic spots develop ecotourism, resort tourism, and community-based tourism that are relatively attractive to tourists.

Assessing the development of tourism in the area over the past period, the aforementioned presentation by the Department of Tourism acknowledged the city's positive cooperation with several travel businesses and the successful exploitation of several tourist routes and destinations that are strengths of the area, maintaining distinctive tourism products... As a result, an increasing number of tourists have been attracted to visit, sightsee, and stay, thereby increasing service revenue.

However, the assessment also emphasizes that, to date, Uong Bi's tourism resources have not been exploited and developed in proportion to their inherent potential, especially its spiritual and religious values, historical and cultural heritage, ethnic culture, and natural landscapes. Tourism products lack diversity, cohesion, and the unique characteristics of each type of tourism are not fully showcased. The quality of tourism products is not diverse or consistent across tourist destinations, leading to Uong Bi failing to retain many visitors for sightseeing, experiences, and stays.

Orientation for sustainable tourism development

In 2024, Uong Bi aims to welcome 3 million tourists, including 500,000 international visitors. This is a significant number, gradually affirming the local brand and position as one of the province's major tourism centers. Currently, Uong Bi is striving to leverage its cultural strengths in building its image as a destination and establishing its tourism brand in the direction of spiritual tourism, ecotourism, green tourism, and sustainable tourism; connecting Uong Bi with tourism centers within and outside the province, and key national and international tourism regions.

Phoenix Hill is a beautiful scenic spot in Uong Bi, loved by many tourists.

To achieve this, the Department of Tourism believes that the city needs to implement six comprehensive solutions to attract tourists. First, it is necessary to continue effectively coordinating with relevant sectors and localities in promoting and introducing the value of historical sites through appropriate methods, focusing on large-scale and widely disseminated tourism promotion events both domestically and internationally. It is also crucial to effectively develop and utilize the city's recognized tourist routes and destinations linked to historical sites and scenic landscapes within the city.

Focus on exploiting the potential of community-based tourism products; strengthen the conservation and promotion of the cultural heritage values of the Dao Thanh Y ethnic group in Thuong Yen Cong commune through the preservation of traditional embroidery crafts, local cuisine , and cultural and artistic values, particularly folk songs, thereby contributing to the preservation and maintenance of cultural values and livelihoods of the community. Promote close coordination among Party committees at all levels, mass organizations, youth, women's associations, farmers' associations, etc., in developing community-based tourism in the locality.

In addition, review and reassess the regional tourism product system, especially the strengths and unique products of Uong Bi tourism. Focus on developing tourism products from heritage sites and exploiting the depth of cultural, historical, and spiritual values, with Yen Tu as the focal point. Research the organization of live performance shows in the cultural and spiritual heritage areas of Yen Tu and Ngoa Van to meet the entertainment needs of tourists at night, thereby extending the length of stay and spending of tourists in Uong Bi.

Another new piece of information is that, according to Decision No. 509/QD-TTg dated June 13, 2024, of the Prime Minister approving the Tourism System Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2045, Yen Tu - Uong Bi is included in the list of 11 potential locations to develop into national tourist areas in the Red River Delta region. This is an important direction for Uong Bi to focus resources on determining the roadmap and goals for tourism development associated with heritage preservation, and to develop plans to concretize these goals in line with the planning orientation.

Sharing further insights from a cultural perspective on developing spiritual tourism in Uong Bi, Associate Professor Dr. Dang Van Bai, Vice Chairman of the National Council for Cultural Heritage, emphasized: Uong Bi inevitably needs to develop comprehensive, interdisciplinary projects (with heritage and tourism as the main focus) integrating the requirements of relevant local sectors to create complete, attractive tourism products with high commercial value, sellable repeatedly to many people at high prices.

In terms of tourism products, larger, inter-regional projects linking with neighboring provinces are essential. It's important to remember that the central core of Uong Bi's spiritual tourism tours and destinations is the Yen Tu historical and scenic site. However, this site is only one important component of the Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son - Kiet Bac complex, which is being nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status. Therefore, inter-regional and inter-provincial cooperation to develop a chain of spiritual tourism products at the historical sites of the three provinces, to fully utilize the potential/resources of a future World Heritage site, is an urgent issue that needs to be addressed.
