Using the important conference, European defense officials outlined their vision for greater security engagement in the Indo-Pacific region, amid concerns about China.
Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said: "Europe and Asia have a 'direct interest' in each other's security. We must work together to avoid confrontation in the region. Nothing is far-fetched in a globalized world."
The EU will do more to engage with countries in the region to help maintain stability, Borrell said.
In his speech, Mr. Borrell stressed that, although the EU has previously maintained a soft approach to security issues, the bloc is committed to doing more to maintain peace in the region.
During his visit to the Shangri-La Dialogue, the EU High Representative also met with Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu.
The EU diplomat described the meeting as “constructive” and wrote on Twitter that the alliance wanted to continue developing EU-China relations based on trust and respect for international law.
