On May 12, Indonesian police confirmed that at least 11 people were killed and dozens of others injured in a serious school bus accident on Java Island, Indonesia's largest island.
According to Jakarta Globe, the bus was carrying more than 60 students and teachers of Lingga Kencana vocational school from Depok town in West Java province to Lembang, a famous tourist destination, when the accident happened at 6:48 p.m. on May 11 (local time).
According to West Java provincial police, the students had just attended a graduation ceremony and were on a picnic. The bus suddenly lost control and veered to the left, then crashed into a car and three motorcycles. Among the dead were nine students and one teacher. One motorcyclist was killed, 13 others were seriously injured and 40 others were slightly injured.
Kompas TV reported that local traffic police suspect the bus' brakes failed before the accident. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Deadly road accidents are common in Indonesia, where vehicles are old, poorly maintained and drivers flout traffic laws. Last month, at least 12 people were killed when a car crashed into a bus and another car on a highway in West Java.
