(HNMO) - "The ancient Thang Long Doan Ngo Festival" with many unique customs and royal court rituals will be recreated at the Thang Long Imperial Citadel Heritage Site (Hanoi), from June 21, on the occasion of Doan Ngo Festival 2023. Notably, this is the first time that the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center has systematically displayed and interpreted the royal palace rituals during the Doan Ngo Festival of the Le Dynasty.
According to the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center, in traditional Vietnamese culture, the Doan Ngo Festival is considered one of the important holidays and festivals, solemnly celebrated by dynasties.
Many historical sources show that, under the Later Le Dynasty, the Doan Ngo Festival was an occasion for the king and the royal family to prepare offerings to their ancestors and parents. According to tradition, this was also an occasion for the subjects and mandarins to receive rewards. The Doan Ngo Festival took place during hot weather, the fan was an essential cooling device, so in addition to the banquet, the king also gave out fans, showing special care and concern for his subjects with the humanistic meaning of giving "blessings, health, and peace".
The program “Thang Long Doan Ngo Festival in the past” at the Thang Long Imperial Citadel Heritage Site includes two main activities: displaying and experiencing rituals with a shimmering, ancient space. The royal palace rituals on the Le Dynasty Doan Ngo Festival were for the first time systematically, vividly and realistically interpreted by the Exhibition Center through a system of panels, paintings, especially the reconstruction of the royal court space, the emperor sitting on the dragon throne holding court, writing poems on fans and awarding fans to officials.
The exhibition space is highlighted by a collection of fans in the unique style of the Lan Tuyet artisan family. This is a high-class fan line often reserved for the ancient royalty, mandarins, and nobles. The fan is not simply a thing to cool down, to protect from the rain and sun... but the fan is also a work of art. Making this fan requires a talented artisan.
In addition, the Doan Ngo Festival exhibition area also introduces unique customs of the people of the ancient Thang Long citadel such as the custom of wearing scented bags, tying five-color threads, applying realgar to children, the custom of picking medicinal leaves at noon, the custom of tying wormwood in the shape of zodiac animals, etc.
In particular, at the opening ceremony, the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center coordinated with the Thang Long Cultural Heritage Association and Y Van Hien Joint Stock Company to perform the offering ceremony and incense offering to the former emperors. In addition, the fan offering ceremony was still maintained and recreated by the center. These are 2 of the 4 important Doan Ngo Festival ceremonies of the Le Trung Hung Dynasty.
