The "heat" in prices makes the durian market "chaotic"

Durian is predicted to take the throne among Vietnamese fruits in China. “Black gold” is worried about losing ground because its profit is 20 times lower than durian.

According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, Vietnam's durian exports have grown strongly in recent times, from a turnover of only 29.2 million USD in 2016 to a soaring increase of 420 million USD in 2022. In 2023, in just 10 months, durian exports are estimated to reach 1.82 billion USD and are forecast to bring in a turnover of 2 billion USD for the whole year.

Durian becomes the king of fruits because of its high price.

The surge in exports has caused durian prices to skyrocket since the beginning of 2023, even reaching VND200,000/kg at times.

Sharing with reporters, Mr. Nguyen Van Muoi, Head of the Southern Branch of the Vietnam Gardening Association, said: After durian was officially exported to China, businesses rushed to register growing area codes and signed contracts with farmers and durian garden owners.

However, at the time of deposit, the price is low, but when the harvest comes, the price skyrockets, leading to farmers breaking contracts and deposits with businesses to sell to brokers. Export businesses, because they cannot buy goods or the selling price is pushed up, have to compensate for losses after each export shipment.

Another consequence, according to Mr. Muoi, is the quality of durian. Accordingly, at the time when durian prices were high (August and September 2023), the market was "chaotic" with buyers and sellers competing to buy and sell, so there was a situation where farmers harvested without ensuring quality and harvested prematurely. Meanwhile, durian is a type of fruit that is difficult to detect whether it is ripe for harvest or not because it depends entirely on the seller's conscience. Therefore, many containers of goods after being exported to China were responded by import partners that the quality was not guaranteed, so they did not take the goods.

“Currently, more than 50% of durian exporting enterprises are facing difficulties and losses. Many enterprises that are allowed to export officially have seen instability and quickly left this market,” Mr. Muoi added.

Adding to this information, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, also said that some businesses have lost up to tens of billions of VND, some even more because many farmers have accepted to pay "deposits" to sell to traders or other businesses at higher prices.

Mr. Nguyen said that to sustainably trade this product, exporting enterprises need to have durian gardens. This is to prevent risks in case the growers “break the contract”, the enterprises still have products to supply to importers.

According to records, at the same time last year, the price of Ri6 durian was only 70,000 - 80,000 VND/kg, but now it has increased to 95,000 - 110,000 VND/kg. In addition to Ri6 durian, other types such as Thai durian and Musaking durian are also at high prices, of which Thai durian is 125,000 - 142,000 VND/kg and Musaking durian is at 160,000 - 190,000 VND/kg...
