According to Gremio president Alberto Guerra, striker Luis Suarez has to take painkilling injections every day due to a persistent knee injury and is considering retiring at the age of 36.
In a video posted on Gremio's Twitter page on June 22, president Alberto Guerra said Suarez was considering retiring because of a persistent knee injury. "Suarez is reaching the limit of his endurance," he said. "In order to play, Suarez has to have painkiller injections almost every day and special treatments. He feels constant pain. Everything is very serious."

Suarez joined Gremio in January 2023 on a two-year contract, after a brief spell of unemployment following his departure from boyhood club Nacional. On his debut, the Uruguayan striker scored a hat-trick as Gremio beat Sao Luiz 4-1 to win the Recopa Gaucha Super Cup.
In April, Suarez won his second title with Gremio, the Campeonato Gaucho - the Rio Grande do Sul state championship. He scored from the penalty spot in the second leg of the final, helping Gremio beat Caxias 2-1 on aggregate.
In total, Suarez has scored 14 goals and assisted eight in 25 appearances for the Brazilian club. However, the 36-year-old has been limited by injury and has missed six games. "We don't know when Suarez will reach his limit, when his last game will be," Guerra added.
Suarez has suffered knee injuries many times while playing for Barca. The most serious one came in January 2020, when the Uruguayan striker suffered pain in his meniscus, had surgery and was out until June 2020. He was out for 149 days and missed 12 Barca matches. In the summer of 2006, after a season playing for the first team of Nacional, Suarez moved to the Netherlands to play for Groningen for a transfer fee of nearly 1 million USD and then moved to Ajax for 8 million USD a year later. Joining Atletico after being abandoned by Barca in 2020, Suarez flourished with 21 goals and three assists to help Atletico win La Liga in the 2020-2021 season. He returned to Nacional in 2022-2023, scoring eight goals in 16 matches.
According to Spanish newspaper AS , this summer, Inter Miami wants to recruit Suarez to play alongside his close friend Lionel Messi. The two stars played together at Barca, winning four La Liga titles and one Champions League.
