The World Championship is the most prestigious tournament in billiards, in the annual tournament system of this sport.
The World Championship takes place only once a year, to distinguish it from the World Cup (similar to World Tours in badminton), which means that each year there are several World Cup rounds, held in different locations.
Bao Phuong Vinh became the first Vietnamese player to win the World Championship.
Bao Phuong Vinh's miracle of course attracted the attention of the international media. In particular, he won the world championship just 2 years after participating in professional billiards, in the 3-cushion carom category.
The homepage of the World Billiards Federation (UMB) wrote: "Bao Phuong Vinh is the first player in history to win the highest position in his first participation in the world championship. He is a new star emerging."
"Bao Phuong Vinh's opponent in the final match, Tran Quyet Chien, realized that the day of the final match was not Tran Quyet Chien's day. Bao Phuong Vinh played with talent and made almost no mistakes on the shots that could have scored points," UMB's homepage added.
Meanwhile, in South Korea, a billiard powerhouse, MKBN wrote: "A new star in the 3-cushion carom category has just appeared. Bao Phuong Vinh became the first Vietnamese player to win the world championship."
MKBN added: "The fact that two Vietnamese players met in the final match is something to be respected. Bao Phuong Vinh was the overall winner 50-34, after 33 turns. In addition to scoring turns, Bao Phuong Vinh also showed excellent defensive skills in the final match with a sophisticated way of running the cue ball."
In Europe, Euro Billiard wrote: "The 3-cushion carom event at the world billiards championship had an extremely unpredictable ending. The 28-year-old young player from Vietnam, Bao Phuong Vinh, became the new champion."
"He won against teammate Tran Quyet Chien 50-34 in the final match," Euro Billiard added.
Another detail about Bao Phuong Vinh that has attracted even more attention from the world media is that this player graduated with a master's degree in economics before participating in professional billiards competitions.
He has only been competing in professional tournaments for about 2 years now. The recent World Championship in Ankara (Türkiye) was just the first tournament for the player from Binh Duong.
