If he were alive, the late Apple founder Steve Jobs would have loved the new Vision Pro glasses, according to author Walter Isaacson. “He would have loved it. I think he’s always wanted to get into new areas since he decided to do the iPod in the early 2000s. That’s unusual for a computer company, and the iPhone is unusual,” Isaacson told CNBC.

Apple announced the Vision Pro mixed reality glasses on June 5 at WWDC 2023. It is the company's first major product since the Apple Watch, the smartwatch launched nearly a decade ago.

The Vision Pro, which starts at $3,499 and is expected to be available in early 2024, allows people to view and interact with content in a mixed reality environment using their eyes, hands, and voice. Isaacson said the technology brings people closer to computers. The device runs on a “spatial computing” platform called visionOS.

The author commented that Vision Pro is a big step forward in human-computer interface, similar to Siri.

Glasses also show how Apple is handling AI, although the words “artificial intelligence” were not mentioned once during the company’s event. According to Isaacson, Apple is thinking beyond chatbots today and focusing more on practical applications of AI.

He believes that AI is not just about chatbots that process text, but also things like mixed reality glasses that process visual data from cameras and turn it into interactive information. That is the real future of AI.
