Getting involved in community activities is the most effective way for Gen Z to increase their understanding of the world around them.
Dao Ha Vy (20 years old, from Ca Mau) has participated in volunteer programs since high school. Vy has experience in teaching life skills to children with developmental delays and difficult circumstances in the locality.
Community Service
Vy's skills class provides a lot of useful information for children, from protecting themselves when alone to how to deal with danger on the road.
Vy also actively campaigns to raise funds to build a swimming pool in her hometown, helping children get used to the water environment and prevent tragic accidents. One of Vy's highly appreciated "achievements" is the proposal to change the name of the "charity class" to "summer class". This seemingly small change helps the learning space become closer, creating a sense of equality, friendliness and comfort.

Summer classes run by student volunteers help many children in remote areas.
According to Vy, engaging in community activities is the most effective way for Gen Z to increase their understanding of the world around them and become more aware of themselves. Vy confided: "Knowing how to love and respect people has a very special meaning. I try to nurture that and pass it on to my younger siblings." In college, Vy actively participated in the Green Summer volunteer campaign and was willing to contribute to charity projects.

For Pham Ngoc Anh Thu (25 years old, from An Giang), participating in iChange Summer Camp 2018 - the annual summer camp of AIESEC (an international youth organization, present in more than 108 countries and 2,000 universities worldwide) is a memorable start to her volunteer journey. The beautiful memories and valuable connections from this milestone motivate Thu to enthusiastically participate in the following volunteer activities of the Faculty of International Relations and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-HCM). Thu can adapt to many different roles, as long as it brings useful things to everyone. She is willing to stand at the counter to raise funds at fairs or cook and support food for the homeless. In addition, Thu also actively participates in humanitarian blood donation.
The Spring Volunteer Campaign is a meeting place for many generations of students to devote their youth.
After graduating, despite being busy with work, Thu still devoted much of her passion to non-profit projects, especially in the field of environmental protection. Thu affirmed: "The valuable experiences during my volunteer activities motivated me to want to contribute more." Last summer, Thu made another mark on her journey when she spent half a month volunteering to protect sea turtles at Con Dao National Park.
Kindness Incubator
The spirit of living beautifully needs to be sown and cultivated everywhere, especially in schools. Currently, many universities have applied a learning model combined with community activities, to orient and encourage students to actively participate in humanitarian projects both inside and outside the classroom.
Dr. Nhan Cam Tri, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance (UEF), said that UEF is one of the first universities to establish a Community Connection Center (also known as a Service-Learning Center). The Service-Learning teaching method has been implemented for many years, directly integrated into a number of specific subjects, requiring students to apply knowledge into practice throughout the course and create practical values, bringing practical benefits to the community, especially paying attention to the disadvantaged.
"Community Connection projects have great educational significance. In addition to providing knowledge, the school wants students to mature through skills, deep awareness of society, perfect their souls, live with a heart and responsibility for everyone, and aim for noble purposes" - Mr. Tri expressed. Not only lecturers but also students can proactively propose and initiate projects to promote their sense of social responsibility.
Spread the spirit of charity and sharing
In recent times, the Central Youth Union and many youth organizations have also promoted activities to promptly discover, honor, and replicate good practices and beautiful lifestyles among young people. The annual National Volunteer Day (December 5) has truly become a festival that many young people look forward to. This is an opportunity to recognize, praise, and express gratitude for the contributions of domestic and international organizations and volunteers, who always volunteer to bring good things to society and the community. Thereby, continuing to spread the spirit of compassion, sharing, initiative, and volunteerism of organizations and individuals in society.
The 2024 National Volunteer Awards will be announced in the coming days, and are expected to continue to bring many inspiring stories about individuals and organizations with outstanding contributions and dedication to volunteer work for the community.
