Exciting and dramatic 17th traditional Dragon Boat Race on Da Do River
(Haiphong.gov.vn) – On the morning of February 19 (the 10th day of the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin), Kien Thuy district organized the 17th traditional Dragon Boat Racing Festival on Da Do River.
Attending the Festival were comrades: Do Duc Hoa, Secretary of the District Party Committee; Nguyen Manh Hung, Standing Deputy Secretary of the District Party Committee, Chairman of the District People's Council; Nguyen Van Tuan, Deputy Secretary of the District Party Committee, Chairman of the District People's Committee; along with representatives of relevant departments, branches, localities and a large number of people of Kien Thuy district.
This year's traditional Dragon Boat Racing Festival on the Da Do River has the participation of racing teams from 18 communes and towns with 360 athletes. The athletes are aged from 18 to 60, competing in 2 categories: men's and women's teams. The women's team competes in 3 laps of 2,400m, the men's team competes in 4 laps of 3,200m, including the first and second leg. Each team has a maximum of 20 athletes, including 14 rowers, 1 driver, 1 water bailer, 1 commander and 3 reserves.
Based on the time to complete the race distance, the male racing team of Dai Hop commune and the female racing team of Ngu Doan commune won the first prize. The second prize went to the male racing team of Tu Son commune and the female racing team of Kien Quoc commune. The third prize went to the male racing team of Huu Bang commune and the female racing team of Thanh Son commune. The male racing team of Du Le commune and the female racing team of Dai Ha commune won the fourth prize overall. In addition, the Organizing Committee also awarded the prize for the best male driver to athlete Vu Van Duong (Dai Hop commune) and the prize for the best female driver to athlete Nguyen Thi Ly (Ngu Doan commune).
Dragon Boat Racing is a traditional cultural activity on Da Do River, Kien Thuy District, which has a sacred and solemn meaning, and has existed for a long time, demonstrating the indomitable will and bravery of the people of Kien Thuy District, determined to overcome the waves and storms to master the sea, defeat natural disasters and enemies; it is a typical and unique activity of Kien Thuy seafarers to pray for favorable weather, calm waves, and calm seas so that fishermen can go out to sea to catch a full catch and prosper. This is also an occasion to pray for blessings, health, peace and a prosperous year for the people of Kien Thuy District.
The traditional Dragon Boat Racing Festival is a traditional mass sports activity to encourage and motivate the masses to actively exercise following the example of the great Uncle Ho; it is a team sport, demonstrating the collective spirit, community spirit, with the desire to overcome oneself. Through the traditional Dragon Boat Racing Festival, it aims to encourage young men and women from coastal areas to regularly practice to improve their health, conquer the sea, exploit many seafood products, promote the strengths of the agricultural district to enrich their homeland and country. This is also a practical activity at the beginning of the new year to celebrate the 94th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam and celebrate the spring of Giap Thin 2024.
