In the UNHCR report titled “Assessing Projected Global Resettlement Needs for 2024,” Asia tops the list of needs in 2024, with nearly 730,000 refugees needing resettlement assistance. This also accounts for 30% of the global need.

The report notes that with the Syrian crisis entering its 13th year and the largest refugee crisis in history, Syrian refugees continue to be in high need of resettlement for the eighth consecutive year. There are currently an estimated 754,000 Syrians globally in need of immediate assistance.

The report also said Afghanistan had the second highest proportion of refugees in need of resettlement assistance, followed by South Sudan, Myanmar and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In addition, UNHCR said that in 2022, out of about 116,000 applications, only 58,457 refugees were approved for resettlement.

According to UNHCR, resettlement offers hope for life and helps protect people at risk, by providing sustainable solutions, while reducing pressure on host countries.

“We will see an increase in refugee resettlement needs in 2024. Resettlement remains a vital solution for those most at risk,” UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi stressed.
