Cold weather often makes people lazy to exercise, and like to snack more. Therefore, setting exercise goals is very necessary.
Fitness experts suggest you can stay active comfortably at home by walking indoors or doing yoga and aerobics, according to the Hindustan Times.
The minimum you should walk on cold winter days is 3,000 steps or 30 minutes of brisk walking.
Minimum steps for winter health care
Dr Mohit Saran, consultant physician at Manipal Hospital Gurugram (India), said: Ideally, it is best to walk 10,000 steps a day, but on cold days, people should stay indoors and walk briskly or do yoga, because in winter, when the temperature drops, the arteries constrict, so the heart has to work harder to maintain blood circulation.
People tend to be lazy to exercise in winter, experts advise to reduce the amount of exercise and focus on activities such as brisk walking, indoor exercise or yoga.
Adequate physical activity helps promote a healthy gut, supporting overall health during the cold season.
How much should I walk at least?
On days when it is difficult to exercise, at least walk or do 20-30 minutes of physical activity to feel active, energetic and stay healthy, says Dr Samrat D Shah, an internal medicine specialist at Bhatia Hospital-Mumbai (India).
Even if you don't feel thirsty, it's important to drink enough water, especially when exercising.
If your pace is 100 steps per minute, you can achieve 3,000 steps in 30 minutes, Dr Shah revealed. So the minimum you should walk during the cold winter months is 3,000 steps or 30 minutes of brisk walking, according to Hindustan Times.
You also need to take precautions during cold weather, Dr. Saran added. If it is very cold, wear more clothes to help retain body heat. Keep your feet warm, wear gloves and a hat to avoid heat loss.
Also, even if you don't feel thirsty, it's important to drink enough water, especially when exercising. Drinking warm liquids, such as herbal tea, can help hydrate and warm your body.
