Indian authorities said on November 27 that 24 people were killed by lightning strikes and about 23 others were injured in accidents related to heavy rains in the western Indian state of Gujarat over the past two days.
According to official data, Gujarat state experienced heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and hail on November 26 and 27, with some places recording up to 144mm of rainfall in 24 hours up to the morning of November 27. The rain damaged many houses and livestock in the state.
Gujarat Agriculture Minister Raghavij Patel said on November 27 that an investigation would be conducted to assess the damage and compensation would be paid to the victims based on the investigation results.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rain in many parts of the state on November 27.
Gujarat has been hit by several natural disasters in the past. In August 2020, heavy rains and floods in the state killed 14 people in just two days.
A year earlier, in August 2019, accidents related to heavy rain killed 31 people.
