Reuters news agency reported that on October 31, at the Future Investment Initiative (FII) conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud announced the postponement of plans to normalize relations with Israel until there is clear progress on Palestinian rights and a roadmap to recognize the state of Palestine.
He criticized Israel for committing genocide in northern Gaza, urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to guarantee the rights of the Palestinian people and a ceasefire in Lebanon.
The Saudi foreign minister's statement comes despite the country's hopes of pushing ahead with a historic deal with the United States that would include enhanced security guarantees, arms supplies and cooperation on a civilian nuclear program.
The agreement could make the two countries a formal alliance, similar to the US-Japan security treaty, providing long-term guarantees for bilateral relations, independent of any particular US administration.
One of the main goals of the US in implementing this deal is to promote the normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel, but the discussions are facing many difficulties.
For Saudi Arabia, recognizing Israel would come with conditions, notably an independent Palestinian state, and the signing of the agreement with the US would not be linked to the process of normalizing relations with Israel.
In an effort to promote the establishment of a Palestinian state, Saudi Arabia hosted the first meeting of a global coalition on the issue in Riyadh on October 30.
According to Saudi Arabia's SPA news agency, in his opening speech at the event, Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah stressed that the escalating violence in the region and continued Israeli military actions against Palestine and Lebanon "require a tough response from the international community."
He called for increased international efforts to promote the implementation of the two-state solution and restore security and stability in the region.
Meanwhile, according to WAFA news agency, the Palestinian President's Office appreciated the efforts of the Riyadh government in organizing the meeting and praised all friendly and allied countries participating in the event.
