Safety after the chaos

Former US President Donald Trump was rushed off the podium at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13 after what sounded like gunshots rang out, just days before he is expected to formally clinch the Republican nomination for the November race. The US Secret Service declared Mr Trump “safe” following the incident.

Video footage showed blood on the former president's right ear and cheek. He was later shielded by security personnel and taken away from the area.

Hours later, he announced in a post on the Truth Social platform: “I was hit by a bullet through the upper part of my right ear. I knew something was wrong immediately when I heard a whistling sound, a gunshot, and immediately felt the bullet tear through my skin.”

Before leaving the podium, Mr. Trump quickly took the opportunity to enhance his image in the campaign by raising his fist in the air several times toward the crowd chanting "USA, USA".

Lots of information left open

The Associated Press news agency quoted law enforcement officials as saying they suspected Mr. Trump was the target of an assassination attempt. The news agency and other US media said the suspected shooter was shot dead by Secret Service agents, while one person attending the campaign event was killed and two others were seriously injured.

Investigators have not yet released the names of those killed or the weapons used in the attack. The Secret Service has not commented on how an armed person or people were able to approach the former president at such a public event.

Ron Moose, a Trump supporter who was at the rally, described the chaos: "I heard about four gunshots and I saw the crowd duck and Trump duck really quickly. Then the Secret Service rushed onto the stage to cover him as soon as they could. I would say in a second, they were all around him."

The Secret Service said the shots appeared to have come from outside the protected area. The FBI has begun investigating the incident.

Some Trump supporters in the Republican Party say the attack was politically motivated.

“For weeks, Democratic leaders have been inciting that Donald Trump’s reelection would spell the end of democracy in America,” said Steve Scalise, a Republican congressman who oversaw a similar incident in 2017. “This kind of provocation has to stop.”

Anyway, "this is not the solution"

Public opinion expressed shock and indignation about the incident, strongly condemning the act of political violence at a sensitive time in the United States.

The incident occurred shortly after Mr Trump began speaking in Butler, Pennsylvania, one of the key battleground states in the November presidential election.

Next week, the Republican Party will hold its national convention in Milwaukee, where Mr. Trump could be formally nominated as the party's presidential candidate.

US President Joe Biden quickly commented after the incident: “I am grateful to hear that he is safe and well. My prayers are with him and his family, as are all those who were there, and we are awaiting further information… This kind of violence has no place in America. We, as a nation, must come together to condemn such acts.”

Ivanka Trump, the eldest daughter of former President Trump, expressed her gratitude: “Thank you for your love and prayers for my father, as well as the other victims of the senseless violence in Butler, Pennsylvania. I am grateful to the Secret Service and all other law enforcement officers for their swift and decisive actions today. I continue to pray for our country. I love you, Dad, today and always.”

Michael Cohen, Mr Trump’s former lawyer and a key witness against him at his criminal trial, sharply commented: “Whether you agree or disagree with someone’s political views, this is not the solution!”

“Political violence in any form is antithetical to American values and ethics, and it is unacceptable,” said House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer, a Kentucky Republican. “There are many questions and the American people demand answers. I have contacted the Secret Service to convene a briefing and also requested a hearing.”

Billionaire Elon Musk expressed his support for former President Trump and hoped he would recover soon.

The National Rifle Association also issued a statement: “We pray for the safety and well-being of former President Trump, as well as the brave men and women who protect him, as well as all those present in Pennsylvania.”

The "unanimity" of the international community

Many leaders and senior members of both the Democratic and Republican parties expressed relief upon hearing that former President Donald Trump was safe, while emphasizing that "violence is never acceptable" and strongly condemning these actions.

Among them are Vice President Kamala Harris, Colorado Governor Jared Polis, Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Massachusetts Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Lindsey Graham, former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, former President Bill Clinton, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi... and many other names.

Leaders of many countries were also quick to send their condolences. The office of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a statement: "We are appalled by the scenes at President Trump's campaign rally in Pennsylvania. We condemn all forms of political violence in the strongest terms and send our best wishes to former President Trump and his family at this time."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the incident: “The shooting of former President Trump is appalling. Needless to say, political violence is never acceptable. I wish former President Trump, those present at the event, and all Americans well.”

“There is no place for violence in the democratic process,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said. “I am relieved to hear that former President Trump is now safe.”
