In 2019, Mr. Jair Bolsonaro - after taking office as President of Brazil for the 2019-2022 term - banned the Venezuelan leader from entering the country, and bilateral relations deteriorated.
When President Lula da Silva took office earlier this year, he lifted the ban and gradually put Brasilia-Caracas relations back on track.
During a meeting with Mr. Lula da Silva on May 29, President Maduro affirmed that the relationship between the two South American countries will continue to be strengthened in all areas, thereby opening a new era.
According to the Venezuelan leader, his meeting with his host counterpart took place in a cordial atmosphere, emphasizing that the two countries will work together to build a peaceful and prosperous South American region.
He said the two countries need to establish a joint mechanism to promote cooperation in areas such as trade, economy , agriculture and people-to-people exchanges, and promote frank and long-term dialogues between Venezuela, Brazil and the governments of other countries in South America.
The head of the Venezuelan government affirmed that Caracas is ready to resume “good relations” with Brazilian investors and businesses, with the aim of promoting mutually beneficial economic cooperation programs.
In addition, Mr. Maduro also said that Venezuela wants to become part of the world's leading emerging economies (BRICS), which currently includes China, Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa.
Previously, the Brazilian President announced that he personally supported the proposal to join BRICS by neighboring country Venezuela.
