Agricultural, forestry and fishery production grows in the first quarter

According to the report of the General Statistics Office, in the first quarter of 2025, nationwide, many positive signals were recorded in all three sectors: agriculture, forestry and fisheries.

Rice yield increases, livestock farming flourishes

As of March 20, 2025, the whole country had cultivated 2,949.4 thousand hectares of winter-spring rice, an increase of 17.2 thousand hectares over the same period last year. The Mekong Delta alone reached 1,508.3 thousand hectares, an increase of 20.7 thousand hectares; the harvested area reached 1,060.3 thousand hectares, equivalent to 70.3% of the cultivated area, equal to 105.3% of the same period. The yield reached 72 quintals/ha, a slight decrease of 0.3 quintals, but the output still reached 10.9 million tons, an increase of 109 thousand tons.

The 2024-2025 crop in the Mekong Delta has completed harvesting with an area of ​​191.8 thousand hectares, an increase of 8.7 thousand hectares; output reached 1 million tons, an increase of 35.4 thousand tons, although the yield decreased by 0.6 quintals/ha.

Winter-spring vegetable cultivation went smoothly, while the area planted with peanuts, sweet potatoes and soybeans decreased due to low economic efficiency. Perennial crop yields increased thanks to favorable weather and the application of techniques in care and cultivation.

Livestock and poultry farming had many positive changes. The total pig herd increased by 3.3%; poultry increased by 3.2%. In contrast, the cattle and buffalo herds decreased slightly, by 0.1% and 3.5% respectively.

Farming leads growth

In March 2025, the area of ​​planted forests and timber output increased sharply. Accordingly, the whole country planted 24.5 thousand hectares of concentrated forests, an increase of 24.1% over the same period. The number of scattered forest trees planted reached 10.8 million (+1.7%), the output of exploited timber reached 1,684.7 thousand m³ (+13.1%). The area of ​​damaged forests decreased sharply to 69.2 hectares (-57.7).

In the first quarter of 2025, the area of ​​newly planted forests reached 45.6 thousand hectares (+17.8%); timber output reached 4,346 thousand m³ (+16.6%); damaged forests decreased to 216 hectares, down 14.4%.

Aquaculture led the growth, with aquatic product output in March 2025 reaching 750.5 thousand tons, up 3.5% over the same period last year. Of which, aquaculture output reached 421.4 thousand tons (+5.3%), and exploitation output reached 329.1 thousand tons (+1.2%).

Accumulated in the first quarter of 2025, aquatic product output reached 1,993.4 thousand tons, up 2.8%; of which fish reached 1,480.3 thousand tons (+2.9%), shrimp 202.4 thousand tons (+4.6%) and other aquatic products 310.7 thousand tons (+1.5%).
