In 2013, Samsung launched the Galaxy Gear smartwatch with a rectangular display. The company then followed it up with the Gear 2 and Gear Live. Since then, Samsung has seemingly been fully committed to circular smartwatches. However, things could change soon if the latest report is accurate.
The report says the South Korean company will once again produce square or rectangular smartwatches, although this time they will be branded as Galaxy Watch rather than Galaxy Gear or Gear as before. The report claims the idea is currently being “enthusiastically considered” internally at Samsung and that “it is highly likely that the transition” to square/rectangular “will happen.”
It remains to be seen whether the new rectangular Galaxy Watch will be the Galaxy Watch7, which will be launched in early to mid-July this year, or whether we will have to wait until 2025 to see the new design. The highlight of the July event will still be the Korean company's next-generation foldable smartphones.
If the design shift does happen, expect more news about Samsung's new smartwatch to emerge in the not-too-distant future.
