At the end of 2018, Chinese phone company Royole surprised the technology industry when it launched the world's first commercially available foldable screen smartphone, called Royole FlexPai.
However, it was not until early 2019, when Samsung introduced the first version of the Galaxy Z Fold, that the foldable smartphone market really became exciting with the participation of many other "big names" such as Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo... Since then, Samsung has continuously launched new foldable smartphone models belonging to the two product lines Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip.
Thanks to its relentless efforts, Samsung has been leading sales in this segment, despite increasingly fierce competition.
However, recently, the "throne" in the foldable screen smartphone segment has changed hands. Samsung was surpassed by another competitor and that name is Huawei.

According to a report by market research firm TechInsights, in the second quarter of 2024, sales of foldable smartphones increased by 85% compared to the same period last year. Asia-Pacific is the region with the strongest market growth, with sales increasing by 106% compared to the second quarter of 2023.
Huawei was the company with the strongest sales growth, with a 229% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This made Huawei the market leader in the Asia-Pacific region and second in the Russian market (after Samsung). Overall, Huawei is now the global leader in the foldable smartphone segment.
This is a surprise, especially when Huawei is under a US government embargo and is not allowed to buy new generation 5G chips from US companies, especially Qualcomm. However, Huawei has developed its own 5G chips for smartphones without depending on US technology, increasing its competitiveness in the global market.
While other companies have seen outstanding sales growth, Samsung has shown signs of "running out of steam" when it only recorded a 5% sales growth in the second quarter of 2024. However, Samsung still holds the second position in the foldable screen smartphone segment.
The top 5 foldable smartphone brands with the largest sales in the world also include Vivo, Honor and Motorola. Notably, Honor used to be a subsidiary of Huawei, but in 2020, Huawei was forced to sell Honor to another Chinese technology company to avoid being affected by the ban from the US government.
Notably, Transsion, a little-known Chinese phone company, grew by 3,150% in the second quarter of 2024. This is a mobile phone company founded in Hong Kong (China) and headquartered in Shenzhen. Transsion is not a new smartphone company, but was established in 2006, selling smartphone models under 7 different brands, most notably Tecno, itel and Infinix.
It wasn't until the second quarter of 2024 that Transsion began launching its first foldable smartphone models. This helped the company achieve impressive growth and currently ranks 7th in the foldable smartphone market.
TechInsights’ report shows that the demand for foldable smartphones is increasing, in the context of traditional smartphone models becoming saturated in design and features. Meanwhile, foldable smartphone models show advantages in large screens and diverse designs.
