Samsung said that in the second half of 2024, AI-powered servers will account for a larger share of the data market, as major cloud service providers and enterprises invest heavily in AI. This will not only boost demand for AI processing chips but also help semiconductor values recover after a long period of being affected by the pandemic.
Samsung's operating profit in the second quarter of 2024 reached $7.52 billion, up 15 times from $484.5 million in the same period last year. This is the highest operating profit Samsung has recorded since the third quarter of 2022, mainly thanks to the strong recovery of its chip business.
Samsung expects the AI chip market to continue to boom in the coming time, opening up great opportunities for chip manufacturers.
One of the key factors contributing to this growth is the booming demand for high-end DRAM chips, especially high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips widely used in AI chipsets.
These chips are at the heart of modern data center servers and AI products, helping to drive the value of chips in the market.
Samsung also revealed that its HBM chip revenue in the second quarter increased by about 50% compared to the previous quarter, showing the strong appeal of AI-related products, especially in the context of major technology companies stepping up investment in AI infrastructure.
Along with Samsung, industry rivals such as SK Hynix also recorded positive results in the second quarter. Last week, SK Hynix reported its highest quarterly profit since 2018, showing strong growth in the AI chip market.
This also reflects the general trend of the global semiconductor industry, as demand for new technologies, including AI and cloud computing, is driving the market recovery.
