The book can be used as an effective self-help tool in dealing with depression, alongside medication or psychological intervention.

Understanding of depression has improved compared to the past, however, stigma is still widespread, causing many people with depression to not accept their condition and not seek care and support. Relatives of depressed people also face difficulties because they do not have enough knowledge about depression and are unable to provide support.
That is the reason why Dr. Tran Kieu Nhu organized the seminar “Going through the darkness - Journey to self-control depression,” introducing the book “Depression and self-control skills for depression” on July 14 in Hanoi and July 21 in Ho Chi Minh City.
The book provides knowledge about depression including the definition of depression, the views of some major psychological theories on depression, the physiological mechanisms related to depression, a quick assessment of depression signs and a summary of how to cope with depression. The book also provides important information about the role of lifestyle habits in depression, thereby guiding the skills of self-control of depression.
This is the result of participating in research supporting self-management of depression in the community since 2017 as well as synthesizing scientific knowledge about depression in medical literature.
“Based on scientific knowledge and experience working directly with people with depression, I wrote the book in a scientific style that is easy to understand and apply for readers,” Dr. Tran Kieu Nhu shared.

Commenting on the book, Dr. Dang Hoang Giang, a development expert and social activist, said that the work provides basic knowledge about the causes of depression and control measures that can be applied in daily life.
“With topics such as: Establishing healthy habits, non-violent communication or dealing with anger, the book is not only useful for those who are depressed and want to prevent it from coming back, or those who are starting to get depressed and want to improve their resistance, but also for all those who are experiencing stress in modern life and want to improve their mental health to have a more peaceful and higher quality life,” Mr. Giang commented.
The talks will take place at 9am on July 14 at 83 Nguyen Khang, Yen Hoa, Cau Giay, Hanoi and at 9am on July 21 at Nguyen Van Binh Book Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.
At the event, the Organizing Committee displayed 17 paintings of people who have/are experiencing depression and their feelings when looking back on their journey./.
