South Korean TV channel Channel A conducted a dialogue with lawyer Heo Joo-yeon about the failure of the Korean team at the 2023 Asian Cup. In it, host Kim Jong-seok asked about the cost of compensation for the Korean team's contract when they fired coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
" You have to look at the contract for more details. But based on the situation, there is no reason to fire coach Klinsmann without being punished according to the contract ," said lawyer Heo Joo-yeon.
" There is an opinion that if we unilaterally fire someone, we have to pay 10 billion won (183 billion VND) in compensation. This is because the clause stipulates that a person whose contract is unilaterally terminated without a reason according to the agreement will receive all of their salary for the remaining time ."
Coach Klinsmann receives a salary of 60 billion VND a year.
Lawyer Heo Joo-yeon said that Coach Klinsmann's annual salary is 3 billion won, and the contract has 2 and a half years left. Therefore, the amount of compensation is about 6 to 7 billion won (110 to 128 billion VND). In addition, the costs incurred when firing him can make the total compensation cost up to 10 billion won.
" The number is so large that it makes the Korean Football Association feel burdened ," the lawyer shared.
Lawyer Heo Joo-yeon added: " According to information from Japan, if Korea is eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup, that can be considered grounds for terminating the contract. However, the team has reached the semi-finals, so we cannot fire Klinsmann for that reason ."
" Also, there are disputes about working from home. As far as I know, it is a Korean residency clause in the contract. Klinsmann probably saw this detail and worked in the US as long as it did not violate it. This shows his lack of capacity ," the lawyer shared.
The Korean public was outraged when the national team was eliminated from the 2023 Asian Cup. They lost in the semi-finals to Jordan. Under great pressure, coach Klinsmann affirmed that he would not resign.
" I am not considering any action. I plan to go to Korea to analyze and discuss with the Korean Football Association the good and bad things. The team needs to improve further with the goal of the World Cup in 2 and a half years. We have to go through difficult first steps and there are many tasks ahead, " said coach Klinsmann.
