Hanoi: Hearing an acquaintance's recommendation, Dung, 32 years old, got a red mole tattooed on her chest to pray for love and "luck", but after a few days it became red, sore, and infected.

Over 30 years old, Ms. Minh, living in Cau Giay, still has no first love. Thinking that she has had a difficult love life, the woman listened to her friend and got a red mole tattooed to change her fate. She learned that girls with a mole on their left chest are considered to be flirtatious, will be pursued by many people, and will have a smooth path to having children in the future.

According to the introduction, she went to a tattoo shop near her house, the cost was 100,000 VND to 200,000 VND, "the more tattoos, the cheaper the price". This person advised that getting a mole tattooed on the right breast would make her career and fortune "rise like a kite in the wind", getting a tattoo around the breast would be a "gold mine, a treasury" that would help her accumulate a lot of land, houses, fields, gardens...

The facility guarantees painless, non-swelling, non-toxic tattoos, tattooing time is only about 5-10 minutes, no special care required. Staff use specialized tattoo tools to inject ink into the skin, then shape the mole in the desired position of the customer.

Seeing that this was just a simple procedure, she decided to get two tattoos on her chest to wish for good luck in the new year. After a day, she felt pain and burning in her chest area, thinking it was due to the effects of the anesthetic. Three days later, the tattoo was red, sore, and oozing fluid, so the woman went to the hospital for a check-up. The doctor determined that she had an infection, caused by the tattoo needle piercing too deeply into the flesh under the skin. Luckily, the injury had not spread, and she only needed to use medication and clean it at home.

In another case, a 39-year-old woman whose business was failing got a tattoo on the back of her hand, which had thin skin and was more painful. When she got home, the wound was itchy and aching constantly, thinking it was due to the anesthetic. "I believed that the mole would bring fortune, so I accepted the pain a little," she said. After a week, the mole was red and swollen, creating a concave scar on her wrist, costing millions in oral and topical medications.

The trend of tattooing feng shui moles has been popular in recent years. Near Tet, this service attracts many customers to spend money. In addition to moles, people also get lucky injections, ear injections, and Chinese nose injections to seek luck.

On social networks, many establishments advertise mole tattoos at low prices, promising to bring in money, luck, love and ensure charm and charm. The locations often chosen by customers for tattoos are the wrist, palm, ear, chest...

In addition to tattooing at the salon, many customers do it at feng shui shops, which are more expensive due to the consultation fee. Customers ask to see their fortune, career, love, health, then choose the injection location as requested.

According to Global Times, red mole tattoos (cinnabar) are popular among many Chinese couples, especially those born after 2000, the Gen Z generation, to mark their "unique love". Many people believe that mole tattoos can change their fate, bringing wealth and luck. In the West, this trend appeared earlier, but for the purpose of beautifying, not seeking luck.

Cultural expert Nguyen Anh Hong, lecturer at the Academy of Journalism and Communication, commented that the tattoo trend is growing and is being supported by many young Vietnamese people, but the old and new ideas are different. During the Van Lang - Au Lac period, men got tattoos instead of armor to hide themselves from enemies when they were shirtless and wearing loincloths. During the Ly and Tran dynasties, this custom arose again, demonstrating a culture of looking back to the roots and the will to protect national independence.

But young people today get tattoos for other purposes. Some want to leave their mark and express their personality. Many others follow trends and want tattoos to show their power, unintentionally creating strangeness and difference.

Dr. Ta Quoc Hung, Department of Dermatology - Cosmetic Dermatology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that mole tattooing is a simple, gentle procedure, and costs less than a large tattoo. However, not everyone with moles has a life as they wish. "The notion of tattooing moles to bring good luck is just word of mouth, not scientifically proven," the doctor said.

Mole tattooing is also an invasive method like other types of tattoos. If the tattoo ink is not of clear origin, there is still a risk of causing dermatitis, allergies, and infections. Tattoo needles that are not replaced are also the cause of infection with hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, etc. Tattooing increases the risk of infection. People with weak immune systems such as those undergoing cancer treatment, arthritis or lupus, need to be especially careful.

The hospital has received many people who suffered from swelling and pain after getting a tattoo because the tattoo needle penetrated too deeply into the flesh under the skin. When the patients returned home, they did not know how to take care of the wound, causing it to become severely ulcerated.

Doctor Pham Duy Linh, Department of Plastic Surgery, Duc Giang General Hospital, said that according to physiognomy, parts of the human body affect fate. However, guessing fate and personality through moles is just word of mouth information.

"There is currently no scientific research proving that moles affect fate, people should not be superstitious," the doctor said.

Doctors recommend that you think carefully before getting a tattoo, even a small mole. Get the procedure done at a licensed cosmetic facility. Cover up your tattoo before going out.

After getting a tattoo, if you notice signs of skin disease or scarring, see a dermatologist. Doctors can help improve scars, diagnose and treat skin diseases early. After getting a tattoo, you need to follow your doctor's instructions to limit infection and inflammation.

In case of severe allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, palpitations, chest tightness or unusual signs on the tattooed skin area, go to the hospital for examination.
