French Norwegian runner Sylvia Nordskar finished fifth in the Mont Blanc Marathon trail, despite a broken and bleeding nose from a fall on a steep slope near the finish line.
Nordskar completed the 42km trail race in Chamonix on June 25 in 4 hours, 31 minutes and 59 seconds. Although she did not make it to the podium, Nordskar still made a strong impression on the fans at the finish line. She ran to the finish line with a joyful look despite a bloody nose, leaving her face and clothes stained from a fall just before.
"About 3 km from the finish, while going downhill at high speed, I fell and hit my nose on the road. The blood kept flowing, but I felt fine, so I continued to finish the race," Nordskar wrote on Instagram after the race.
Despite the injury, the Norwegian runner called Sunday a great day, calling finishing fifth a major accomplishment. Nordskar was also proud to be racing alongside some of the strongest female trail runners in the world. She said having the women start before the men made this year’s Mont Blanc Marathon more competitive and exciting than ever.
The winner of the race on June 25 was American Sophia Laukli with a time of 4 hours 12 minutes 39 seconds - a record for the race. The remaining two spots on the podium were taken by Chinese athlete Miao Yao with a time of 4 hours 24 minutes 27 seconds, and Spanish runner Oihana Kortazar with a time of 4 hours 25 minutes 57 seconds. Swiss athlete Theres Lebouf finished fourth with a time of 4 hours 30 minutes 2 seconds.
The Mont Blanc Marathon was founded in 2003 and is an annual trail race held in the mountains of Chamonix, France. It is also the second leg of the world's most prestigious trail race, the Golden Trail World Series. Runners competing in the 42km race will have to conquer a distance of 2,730m in elevation, within a time limit of 9 hours. The 2023 race will have 2,279 runners competing in this distance.
