According to TechSpot , the results of the February 2025 Steam user survey show that the RTX 4060 graphics card (GPU) has officially surpassed the RTX 3060 to become the most popular hardware. The data shows that the percentage of users owning the RTX 4060 increased by 3.97% compared to the previous month, while the RTX 4060 Ti also recorded a 3.11% increase. These are unusually large numbers compared to the less than 1% change that Steam usually records on a monthly basis.

RTX 4060 increases sharply, dethroning RTX 3060, reflecting the current trend of users upgrading to new GPUs

The RTX 4060 has been catching up to the RTX 3060 for some time now, but a 4% increase in a month is rare. Along with the RTX 4060, the most used graphics cards on Steam are still mostly RTX 60 and 70 series from the Lovelace, Ampere, and Turing generations.

In addition to the change in the GPU segment, the survey results also recorded a sudden increase in Intel's CPU market share. After months of AMD narrowing the gap, Intel suddenly increased by 5%, pushing AMD down to 31.19%. This is a development that goes against the trend of the retail market, where AMD has had strong growth in recent times.

Nvidia continues to dominate the graphics card market on Steam, accounting for 83% of all GPUs surveyed. AMD has 11.5% of the market, while Intel has 5.2%. These numbers continue to confirm Nvidia's dominance in the gaming graphics card space.

Not only hardware, but also operating system data on Steam fluctuated greatly in February. Windows 10, which had been surpassed by Windows 11 in previous months, unexpectedly increased by 10.5% and regained the position of the most popular operating system. Meanwhile, Windows 11 decreased by more than 9%, going against the trend of using new operating systems. Windows 10 is expected to end support on October 14, 2025, and according to statistics from Statcounter, the global market share of this operating system fell from 62.7% in December to 58.7% in February.

The Steam survey also noted other notable changes. 32GB of RAM became the most popular standard for the first time, up 13.7%, while the number of users with 16GB of RAM dropped by 8%. The most popular language on Steam also changed, with Simplified Chinese increasing by a whopping 20% to 50% of all users, while English dropped by 10%.

This isn’t the first time the Steam survey has seen major fluctuations. In October 2023, the data also showed unusual changes, including a nearly 14% increase in Simplified Chinese. However, the numbers returned to normal a month later. So the March 2025 results could indicate a correction in Steam users’ hardware and software usage trends.
